Migrating to Linux

Hey folks,

The SageTV server is the last machine in my house still running windows and it is at least 4 years old. All the PCs and notebooks have been upgraded from Windoze to Ubuntu 11.04 and the change has been good for everyone in the house. There are no problems with having made the change and nobody has any tasks that they can't still do.

So, I was thinking of getting the SageTV server onto Ubuntu as well. This begs several questions:
1. Since the store is closed can I still get a Linux package somewhere and will my Windows license work?
2. Has anyone made an HD-PVR work on Linux?
3. Does it even make sense to try this?

If the answer to #3 is no, then I'll probably just clone the current boot partition to an SSD and refresh the storage media.

You cannot purchase the Linux licensed version of Sage. The Windows license cannot be used with another OS platform.

You can't get a linux license...

I have 2 HDPVRs running under linux... and I use the commandir for IR blasting... I had tried to use lirc and a couple of other irblasting solutions, but they all sucked. I was almost ready to ditch ir blasting totally until I bjenkins recommended that I try commandir.

Given that you can't buy a linux license, i'd stay on windows... otherwise I'd recommend you try it, especially since it's your only windows machine left.

Another reason to stay on windows (for sagetv server) is I believe linux reaches out to a server for validation of the key whereas windows does not. So if down the line you need to rebuild your linux server and try to re-activate your key (if you had one) and they no longer maintained the linux activation server, you could be out of luck

Except that the validation is based on mac address. So as long as you know the mac address of the old system, you can force the new system to use the same address. That avoids any re-activation. You are still screwed if you loose your activated sagetv server directory, but that's what backups are for

Even so, I'd say that the DRM involved in the Linux version makes it less desirable than the Windows version - all other things being equal on the performance/reliability fronts.
