Migrating from WHS to Win 7
I have finally raised the white flag with WHS. For the upteemth time I'm getting audio out of sync issues. Demigrator seems to be the main culprit and I don't want to keep trying to solve this ongoing issue.
I'm planning on migrating from WHS to Win 7. Has anyone had any issues with this or any tips? |

I did this a little while ago. No real issues - I continue to run WHS for backup and as a file server so I have two servers sitting beside each other. I have all of my media data on my W7 Sage server as well as on my WHS. I haven't done this yet but I plan to use software to sync the videos, music and photos so that I have totally redundant hardware.
The biggest drawback was that some of the recorded TV shows didn't come across very well so I lost some of them. I have an additional Sage license so I am still running Sage on WHS but it doesn't have any tuners connected. This way I can get back up and running immediately in terms of playback to all of my extenders by just swithcing the server that I connect to - assuming that Sage still works on the WHS box.

Actually with version 7 all the recorded tv metadata is written to the files themselve so it is painless. Keep your wiz.bin for your recording schedule and just move the tv files into the new library. It is pretty painless and I did the same a couple months back haven't missed whs a lick.

I did this a while back and haven't looked back. The hardest part was transferring the recordings and that really just took a looong time.
It couldn't be simpler.

For those going from WHS to W7... what version do you recommend? Still planning on primarily the same functionality as my current server: Sage server, Squeezebox server, Show analyzer, ripping movies, scanning photos, etc. No client use to speak of.

64 bit home is sufficient. I use ultimate for the advanced features for networking and such. I would definately recommend 64 bit unless you need FireWire tuning.

What differences have you noticed between the two? I haven't started using either so I don't want to invest the time into one if there is a better one out there (same story for everything I guess...)
EDIT: Just read a review of both and CrashPlan has file versioning while OpenDrive doesn't for me that doesn't help much as you have no clue as to what period you are backing up to. OpenDrive does let you view/edit/download/play files from it's cloud which is pretty cool, but I don't need that feature. I'm not looking for an online backup solution, I just want it to backup locally to my NAS or to my parents' pc for a remote backup.

For me, CrashPlan would be more costly, annually, for multiple PCs.
I use SecondCopy for local backups. It has an option for versioning. Quite reliable. On XP and W7. Costs $30. Last edited by stevech; 04-16-2011 at 06:26 PM. |
