Diamond versus Phoenix

First off, I'd like to thank everyone who's part of either of these development teams for your dedicated hard work, and that I don't intend on this topic to pit one UI against the other in a negative way.

I've been running Diamond since it was first introduced and very much like lot's of things about it. For comparison sake, I'd like to have a go also at Phoenix.... but overall my WAF barely hovers above the "acceptable" limit, so my testing phase is all but short and sweet to avoid much disruption in the family room.

So, for starters, if I wanted to try Phoenix, do I simply go to my Installed Plugin section, and disable Diamond? Or do I have to uninstall? What's the best way to do this to allow simple conversion back and forth from Phoenix to Diamond? Obviously, I'd take a backup (just copy the entire "Sage" folder to a backup location?), prior to any conversion.

What are the main differences between Diamond and Phoenix?

Do you have a personal preference for one over the other?

Again, great work to both development teams. Could I have a Phoenix UI on an extender and a Diamond UI on a PC client? Maybe I could have each UI in different places to enjoy them both.

Diamond and Phoenix are two completely different beasts. Diamond is at theme, and additional views, for the base SageTV7 UI. Phoenix, on the other hand, is a completely different UI. Nothing of the original SageTV7 UI remains, as such, and UI Mods for the SageTV7 UI will not work (though they should get disabled automatically when switching to Phoenix, as long as they have the proper STV pre-req's set)

You can very easily use a completely different UI at each location, if there is a less 'critical' location, you can try out phoenix there.

Phoenix and Diamond can co-exist without having to remove Diamond. As Fuzzy noted, when you load the Phoenix UI (on an extender, etc), then any UI plugins that you have installed will be disabled on that extender while Phoenix is running.

Also, since Phoenix is in beta and is not complete, then you can potentially configure Phoenix to punch back out to Diamond in some cases... ie, we do that now when we re-load the default STV for music.

OK, I was wondering about that. Want to play some with Phoenix but didn't want to mess with the rest of the Family's experience while I check it out.

So I could use one of the other extenders, reboot to connect to my test (V7) server, load up Phoenix on that extender and would have no impact to the extender currently connected to Test/V7 server for the family to get familiar with V7? Nice

Will save me some headaches.

@greywolf - Yeah, since Phoenix is its own STV (and not a plugin), then it has no impact on other STVs and Plugins, and you can choose to run it on one or extenders without impacting other extenders, clients or placeshifters.

Not to hijack the thread too much, but I would like to use Diamond on some extenders and Phoenix on others. How can we get them to coexist? After installing Phoenix, even if I switch back to the SageTV7.xml in 'Detailed Setup->Advanced' Phoenix continues to load up on my extenders / Placeshifter clients. (hitting home seems to switch the UI back to Phoenix, regardless of the chosen UI Package). The only way I seem to be able to get Diamond to stay loaded is to uninstall Phoenix. What is the correct way to get both to coexist?

Going into Detailed Setup -> Advanced from Phoenix puts sage in a sort of strange state (still using Phoenix.xml, but temporarily switching to SageTV7.xml for the setup screens). Therefore, simply choosing SageTV7.XML from there will not truly change it (as it will still have the Phoenix callback set-up). To switch a UI out of Phoenix, there is an option IN Phoenix's options screen (can't remember exactly, but it's revert to stock UI, or switch to stock ui.. something like that).

Hey folks - I must be missing something obvious... Where do I get Phoenix? I've looked in Downloads and don't see it... Unless it is right in front of my face and I don't see it (hiughly possible!)... Thanks!

Install it through the sage plugin screen under UI tab.

U have to be running sage v7. And it will show up under the ui section of the plugin repository.

It's in the "Full UI' section of the plugin repository for V7.

Gonna give this a shot, while I do like Diamond, I am hoping this will be a bit more responsive on my HD100. Was just going to pull the trigger on a 300 when they sold to Google, so grabbed a boxee box instead.
