Permissions and Metadata

I am wondering what the "Edit Metadata" permission does in the latest beta. I wasn't aware that you could edit metadata in the default UI (without the addition of a plugin such as BMT/CMT). When I install CMT and then create a 'user' with edit metadata permissions disabled, this user is still able to access/edit metadata via the CMT plugin. So what does disabling the ability to edit metadata really do?

On imported videos there is an option "Edit Video Information" which is controlled by the permissions. I'll be making a change in the next version of CMT to use the permissions too.
