Permissions in registry

Can somebody tell me why when you use sage tv once, the permission for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE came to every one???

It erase all other permissions.

It is very important for me since when other application creates keys, the permissions for new keys is the current userid, since the root HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT have only everyone in it. So the files associations created by winzp, by exemple, are locked to all users except the one that have install winzip.

I did many tests. I recreate all permissions of registry file, but, as soon I start sagetv I lost every permissions.

This is very bad, because every single application installed after sagetv run once, will create registry keys locked to other users on this machine.

See attacahment before and after sagetv ran.

I can't say that it's caused any problems for me, but if you think it's a bug, file a bug report on it. Now's your chance to get it in the bugfix queue for V6.

Request Official SageTV Technical Support (for released versions)
Submit a Bug Report for a SageTV Beta (for V6 Beta)

Thanks I did.

This is not a problem, unless you have more that 1 user on the pc, and the second user want to update the registry key affected by this bug.

This will cause problems for those who want to install ie 7.0.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/917925

You will have to reset registry permissions before installing ie 7.0

Ouch. Talk about bad form. If that's true, it's not just a bug, it would leave Sage open for litigation if someone found a way to comprimise systems because of those registry permissions (and for those of you playing along at home, yes, it can be taken advantage of.)
Mind you, that would only be the case *IF* this were proven to be true on other systems.

Ca you check to see if I am the only one with this problem?

Do start, run, and type regedit.

Right click on HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, then permission.

If you just have everyone full access, add administrators and system (full control), and remove everyone.

Restart sagetv service or start sagetv gui.

Goback in regedit and you should see that sagetv set it back to everyone and everything else got deleted.

Post you results here. Mayby I am the only one with that problem.

Thanks

You will not be able to install Internet explorer 7.0. Also, If you add another user to your windows XP, it will not be able to modify files association.

I think that this problem should be solved. I have tried V5 and V6 and both version have the problem.

Thanks JJ

That needs to be fixed ASAP. To do anything other than release an emergency patch right away would be grossly negligent.

For those who wants to do a batch to reset permissions correctly.

http://winonline.blogspot.com/2005/1...ssions-to.html

But be sure to turn off sagetv service because it will reset to everyone.

I've been banging my head against the wall trying to work out why association changes wouldn't stick! Thank you.

Has a bug report been submitted?

Same thing here, the permissions are set to everyone....

This is a very bad thing from a security point of view. It means everyone can make changes to that branch of the registry tree.....!

I think my problems of the last two weeks were a result of this as well. I plan on checking this when I get home and filing a bug report if I find it to be true. Really messed me up. I ended up reinstalling XP pro several times not realizing it was Sage that was causing the problem and not the later software. Thanks for posting this.

I just tested this and SageTV is in fact setting the permissions in the registry to everyone. This is definitely a big issue as I use my main PC also as a Sageclient. And I really don't want erveryone having full control over any part of the registry.

It seem that it is not only set the root to everyone, it also remove some other permission in subkeys. I ending up with keys without any permissions. Many other software can't write under those keys after sagetv was installed and run.

I don't know what Sage is doing, but it messed up all permission for HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.
