In video file with 2 audio tracks, always select a specific one
All,
If I'm currently converting some of my tv recordings, to an mp4 file with the 1st audio track as 2.0 aac audio, and the second as 5.1 ac3, So they can be compatiable with my iOS devices(apple tv 2/iphone 4/ipad). The catch is In order for them to be compatible with ios devices the first audio track must be the 2.0 channel aac track. Now for at home playback I want to always use the SECOND ac3 5.1 channel track. How can I have sage always choose the second track ac3 5.1 track? My guess is that this is something that is not built in, and would probably have to use/develop a plugin to do it. (as a thought..This same sort of logic/solution could probably apply to automatic language selection as well) Last edited by Gustovier; 05-14-2011 at 01:13 PM. |

I have been wondering about the same thing. It would be nice to be able to select a default audio track to start with as I do something similar with my MKV files.

BTW, you can easily change the playback priority with Nero to DVD and BR with tsMuxer by changing the language for each track... Of course if it does work this solution is just a hack, a proper plugin would be a clean way to do it, just a thought Eddy

This way if iOS devices are picking up the first track whatever the language is it will work and under SageTV it will pick up the second track (whatever the audio format) because of the language match. I'm not sure about Handbrake, but in every tool I use to convert/remux videos the language attribute for each audio track is always available to select. This is the first thing that came up to my mind after reading the original post; logically could work, practically someone needs to try it out Eddy

This isn't (or shouldn't) be an issue for MKV (which someone else brought up). For MKV you can specify which audio track is the DEFAULT regardless of its index within the container.
I don't know if MP4 has that attribute, but if it does, that may still cause iOS devices to try and play the AC3 if it's set to default. Look for "MP4 Tools" or similar to MKVMerge/MKVToolnix. Of course the real solution is to Jailbreak your iOS devices and put some non-Apple software on there to play back video. Not a single Apple-provided app with iOS is anywhere close to "good enough" at its subject matter, especially the video player.
