OT q for Pluckyhd re 30 TB storage

Plucky,

What are you using to get 30 TB of data and how do you back it up?

Tom

Odds are, if he's using the 30TB for media.. he isn't backing it up... as for how he's getting 30TB, my first guess would be a lot of hardrives...

The other question is how much of the 30 TB is actually watched? It's probably a very tiny percentage. I have about 20 TB between the SageTV computer and unRAID server. Once you get over a few TB, your percentage of watched videos drops very fast. There just isn't enough time in a day to watch that much video. But someday, you might just want to watch the video you did not have to delete!

Curious... How many and what model/brand of enclosures do you have or prefer? Do you back up the RAID5 in any way?

(I am getting ready to do a build and I'm trying to decide what to do. If it works for you it will probably work for anyone. )

I thought I had a pretty decent amount of storage with 10 TB.

Do I prefer or could I afford for home . I use the 8 bay sans digital with esata raid cards. I have 3 now and don't have any issues. If money is no object a good 3ware with a battery backup. Either way may sure you have a good reliable battery backup.

$800 for an empty enclosure? Seriously? I get it that it has every port you could ever want but wow. Only 5 bays?

This may be more of a chicken and egg question, but did you decide initially to minimize the number of internal tuners (just the 1 colossus listed in your sig) in favor of more PCI-E slots for esata raid cards or were you forced to move away from internal tuners in order to free up the slots necessary for the raid cards?

Also, just out of curiousity, motherboard-wise, are you running something like a P45 ATX board?

I know its $$$ but for what it does ,Never lose your data again even if 2Drives fail ! for me it was worth it
Your Personal Speed Demon: USB 3.0, eSATA, FireWire 800
With the new USB 3.0 interface on the Drobo S, data transfer is up to 50% faster than FireWire 800. USB 3.0 offers backward compatibility with all existing USB 2.0 systems, and the Drobo S features a triple interface with eSATA and FireWire 800 to ensure you'll have a high-performance connection for virtually any system.

World's Most Expandable USB 3.0 Array
The new Drobo S is the most expandable USB 3.0 product available today, with "industry first" support for multiple storage volumes that provide capacity up to 32TB and beyond. Only BeyondRAID allows you to instantly expand your capacity by simply adding a drive or replacing the smallest drive with a larger one, even when all five drive bays are full. The unique ability to mix and match drive capacities, brands, and speeds ensures you will be able to take advantage of larger drives as they become available.

**Protection from Two Drive Failures**
Enable the dual-drive redundancy option to protect your data from failure of up to two hard drives. It's all done with a single click, and without ever losing access to your data. Running out of space? Switch back to single-drive redundancy at any time. Unlike moving between traditional RAID 5 and RAID 6, there's no need to reformat or migrate data off of Drobo S, potentially saving you hours or days of downtime.

Self-Healing Technology
With the self-healing technology now incorporated into Drobo S, your data is safer than ever. Even when sitting idle, Drobo S will continually examine the blocks and sectors on every drive, flagging questionable areas. This preemptive "scrubbing" helps ensure your data is being written only to the healthy areas of your drives, and that your data is always safe. Even if a drive fails, Drobo S keeps your data in the safest state possible, utilizing the available space on the remaining healthy drives.
