Wink "Bad" things about Sage: early observations

SageTv and my new Server have been fully functional up and running 8 days, since 5/14. Already recorded and have 159.76Gb of "stuff" stored! (And already watched and deleted some, though most of our watching currently is VHS stuff recorded over the past season)

1) Too easy to support multiple tuners enabling multiple concurrent recordings. (have 4 250s in Server, 1 in main HTPC Client)

2) Too high a WAF factor, Debi's been adding in favorites already!

3) Too easy to put Client on any PC, see #2

4) Will be too easy to add additional storage when current 1Tb runs low!

5) Will be too easy to add additional tuners if current 5 isn't enough!

The record, as far as I have seen, is 8 tuners. Come on, go for the record!

Believe it or not I've already been thinking about adding additonal tuners. Primarily in case we find we need to pad recordings.

Do you have cable boxes/sat tuners and USB-UIRT units for each tuner?

No, we've stayed with analog extended basic cable. Since digital cable and sats don't broadcast movies in 5.1 or better audio I don't use cable for movies, except for old ones etc. Definitely not for newer movies available with DTS or DD sound tracks. I rent or buy the DVD. And it definitely made setting up Sage Server Client netork simpler! I've thought about maybe getting one or two digital cable boxes and upgrading but just haven't had enough reason. Maybe one of these days...

there are some cable boxes that can do surround 5.1
but you still are recording in stereo
so what are you using as clients and what all is in the server?

SageTV Client software can be on any PC on the Network with or w/o PVR and fully utilize SageTV Server no problem. (need license for each instance of Client) One of the beauties of Sage!

I don't know how well it will work wirelessly, but if you want the server to make use of a tuner in another machine, you will need to use SageRecorder with it, as Client will not directly control a tuner in the machine it is on.

Works just fine for me too.. even with more than one client at the same time on 802.11G. Although I'll admit I normally only have one 802.11G client using Sage ata a time.

I have an 802.11B network at the moment and it's not fast enough for streaming video unfortunately. Fortunately, the wireless card that's in the server is an 802.11G so I'll just have to replace the router. I'd rather just have it wired, but there's no wire in the living room.

I still do not see how you use wireless g?
Man I can sit in the same room as the router and still if I even move with the notebook in my lap
the video will freeze for a second
in the other room the video will stutter randomly
it is definitely not a satisfactory solution for me

if anyone has any suggestions I would be happy to try them

I live in a two bedroom aprtment will the router on the far side of the apartment second bedroom

I can barely keep a connection for the interent in the master bedroom on the other side of the apartment approx. 40~50 ft

Wish I had some suggestions! It has always 'just worked' for me though. I do have my G network setup as 'g only' wqhich does give an increase in performance, as well as using frame bursting.

But other than that, it is pretty non-tweaked...

What kind of internet do you have that wireless can't keep up with, an OC-12? Most broadband is no more 3mb/s downstream and a solid 802.11B connection should maintain 4 or 5mb/s.

My Netgear SuperG works great maintains 30-40 mb/s at 100 feet from the router.

yeah just running wireless g
and set it up for wireless g only
but how to do you set it up for frame bursting?

Well in the master bedroom sometimes it does not get a connection or only connects at a 1MBPS connection and my interent
is 1.5 MB down/128K up

my router does have the ability to connect at only 54MBPS but I thought this would limit the distance and make it so it would not connect at all
now it is on auto
