Setting up a Test Server - questions
OK...finally replaced the wife's desktop with a new machine and figure to repurpose the old machine as a test box, to include a test SageTV box once she is sure she has everything (configurations/settings) on the new box as she had them on the old.
That being said, I record locally on the SageTV then move the files to my Storage server. Currently on V6 of SageTV. Figure to setup the Test box with SageTV V7. Once I have it configured, I was thinking of copying the wiz.bin from the Prod box to the Test box so I could see (and show) what the Prod box would look like once convert that to V7. My questions are: 1. Since they are seperate instances of SageTV with seperate wiz.bin, could/would this mess up the Prod recordings? What impact would the "added metadata" from the V7 conversion have on the Prod V6 box? 2. Would messing around on the Test box (mark shows watched, unwatched, archived, unarchived, etc) change anything on the Prod box? Are those just kept in the wiz.bin or are they part of the file's metadata? What do others with Test Boxes do for content? |

First, you do not have to copy over the wiz.bin unless you want to have the same viewing history and Favorites. Sage stores most of the metadata in the recordings themselves. What happens with the "added metadata" depends on the plugin that added it.
Changing the watched, like, and archive status will be kept seperate for each Sage installation since that info is stored in the wiz.bin. I do not ever share recordings between my test system and production system. I might copy recordings from one to the other to check out how things work but I never let them share recordings. If something goes wrong and I accidentally delete my wife's soap's ... well, it's not a good thing I'd suggest putting an old capture card into the test box and let it record a bunch of things that you can experiment with.
