HVR-2250 Not Working

Here is my setup:

Server: Dell PowerEdge 2950 III
Memory: 4GB
OS: Windows Server 2008 Standard (64bit) with Service Pack 2
NICs: (2) onboard GB and one dual GB card
Tuner: HVR-2250
Storage: (2) 16TB Drobo Pro iSCSI direct attach RAID units
Software: SageTV V7.0.23.246
PlayON V3.2.3.1594
MyMovies V3.18
WinTV V7

I am extremely pleased with the SageTV product. We have over 1200 movies and TV shows that we have copied from our DVD's and BD's onto the server. We have (6) SageTV HD300's and multiple PC's which we use to access the server.

We finally decided to get rid of Time Warner cable TV since it was costing way to much for 6 TV's. Our goal was to use over the air and a combination of Netflix and Hulu to fill the gap. The Hulu and Netflix are working great but the OTA solution is not. I bought an HVR-2250 so that we could use the server as a DVR but that has failed.

The HVR-2250 drivers successfully install but the card is never detected by SageTV or WinTV. I tried to work with Hauppauge but all I got from their tech support was to reinstall the OS. I have worked with computers now for almost 40 years and that is not a solution that I use to troubleshoot and fix problems.

What I would like is any recommendations for PCI or external tuners that work well with SageTV. I have been looking at the HD HomeRun-Tech box but I only saw the HD HomeRun box listed on the SageTV site. Does anyone know if the Tech version is supported?

kkwoodbrey,
In sage tv, the HVR 2250 card is not detected as a 2250 card. Instead mine shows up as a Hauppauge WinTV-7164 Analog Capture Digital TV Tuner when I added it.

And the 2nd 2250 tuner shows up as a Hauppauge WinTV-7164 Analog Capture #2 Digital TV Tuner .
Trallyus

P.s. Usually I have to reboot the computer after installing the tuners to be able to scan for new channels

I should have been more specific. The tuner is detected by SageTV but not by WinTV. SageTV gets an ERROR (-10): No encoders can tune the selected station.

Which 2250 drivers are you using?

If you have sage tv running as a service , try turning it off before running win tv and see if that fixes the problem. I think I had problems trying to run both programs at once since they were both trying to use the same tuner.

Also I had to scan for channels after I ran win tv as well as some other things I can't remember. I think I also had to tell it how to use the tuner as well but not sure.

In Windows Device Manager the card is detected under Sound, video and game controllers as a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR2250 (8851) using the Hauppauge driver version 7.9.1.28162 which I think is the most current driver. When I try to add it as a source in SAageTV I get: There was a Capture Error in playback. Details: ERROR (-40x80040154)

I have also now uninstalled WinTV so as to avoid any potential conflict.

Add the tuner in sage without scanning for new channels then once you add both tuners, reboot the computer and try scanning for new channels.

I always have to do the above when I add tuners to sage for some reason and it usually fixes the problem.

The only way I fixed that error if I remember right was to copy the wiz.bin file if this is not your first sage tv install and then uninstall sage tv and delete the sage tv directory and reinstall sage tv all over again and then add your tuners like I suggested.

Also you should re-download the sage tv software over again before reinstalling it as I think that error when I had it happened when the sage tv software did not fully download hence the reason I suggest you re-download it.

Trallyus

P.S. once done copy your wiz.bin file back - if this is the first time your setting up sage tv I would not worry about this unless you have your favorites already set up etc.

I notice that version 28162 of the drivers is the latest released version on Hauppauge's web site right now. I have not tried this version of the drivers, but have seen several people post about problems with the latest driver (which I assume is this one).

I am running with driver version 27323 and do not have any problems with Sage. Perhaps you could try installing an older driver?

I'm not sure of the best place to get older drivers, but I know there is a member of this forum (username SHS) who seems to have an inside track with Hauppauge and has his own website/forum with lots of drivers and other info for all the different Hauppauge devices posted here http://www.shspvr.com/smf/.

I have been through the uninstall/reinstall SageTV cycle several times. No change in the outcome. Is there some way to get a more in-depth logging or tracing to see what is actually happening?

Also I originally had an earlier version of the HVR-2250 drivers which did not work. That was the reason I upgraded to the most current.

Did you re-download the sage tv software as well as remove the sage tv directory after uninstalling sage tv and reboot before reinstalling the newly downloaded sage tv program like I suggested as that is how I fixed the error.

If you don't want to do that sage tv allows you to turn on debugging mode and send the bug reports to the sage tv people to try and help you. Do that by going to Setup/Detailed Setup/Advanced and scroll to the bottom and debug logging is found there. Do a search for debug logging to find more info what to do with the logs and where they are found as I have not had to use them in a long time.

I almost forgot - Sometimes you may need to go in to setup-detailed setup-"Video/audio" and check to make sure those settings are right before the card will work as well.

In example I have to use EVR as my video renderer for my setup. I think you can test this by playing a video if you have it and if it gives you the same error or blue screen then you have the wrong video settings. At least that is how I found out I had to use evr for my setup.

Hmmmm. That's the driver my dad is using, and he's not having problems, he uses it for analog and digital. But then I'm using 27091, but have no analog channels where I am.

Are you certain that you are getting an adequate input signal? My HVR 2250 is connected to cable; but I had problems if I was getting to little or too much (once I amplified the input).

I use the same driver as well but only for digital. I had bad experiances trying to use the 2250 tuner as 2 digital and 2 analog drivers in the past so all I watch now is digital version 28162 i mean

I've had on and off issues with the 2250 as well, including the published break/.dll fix on the Sage site.

Mine still refuses to work with a certain channel. But just one. I've also had it insist it is a QAM tuner (went into properties file to fix that) as well as DVB tuner, which I think Sage fixed with the .dll file fix.

I think the 2250's are a little twitchy, to be honest. I also found some increased stability in my system by uninstalling WinTV on it.

I wish there were a "Properties Purge" utility that would pull out old tuners. I've got tuners in their from a couple of years ago. It's great if you pop the tuner back in, but I can't help wondering if it does not cause issues.

It could be another app/service as well. My HD-PVR has worked great since I went into the registry and pulled out old DVICO stuff that the uninstaller had supposedly removed. It would periodically try to start and drive my Sage nuts, as did the supposedly uninstalled WinTV app.

To me much of this is hit and miss and found by accident.

Ever get these cards working on Server 2008? I'm in the process of upgrading my Sage box (whsv1) to Whs2011, and just want to see if you got the cards working on server 2008 (since whs2011 uses that as it's base). If not guess I'll go with Win7 and be done with it, lol.
