I just tested the playon plugin with sage tv and a playlater file and if you have both installed when you load up playon on sage tv it will pop up a screen and you choose playlater recordings and then it will show you a folder with your recordings in it and you open that and then you choose one of your recordings and after you choose it, on my pc , it downloads the recording and starts playing it on sage tv.

I have no idea how it works on the sage extenders. I will record a show from CBS and see if adskip works with sage tv since all of my old recordings were made before adskip.

Looks Like due to sage tv downloading the files that the ad skip feature on playon for sage tv is useless , at least with pc it is.

I've been using Playon for several years now, using the "basic" license. I finally bit the bullet last week and upgraded my license and got Playlater and HD too.

(aside: a couple days after I made my purchase, the following new deal arrived that would have saved me $25.
http://www.cnet.com/news/get-lifetim...per-for-49-99/
)

My experience with Playlater has been a little bit tainted by the fact that my CPU is too slow (it's only a dual core) so my recordings 'fail' too often. I expect this will be corrected when my new CPU arrives tomorrow.

I put my Playlater recording directory in one of my 'video import' folders. SageTV picks it up fine and BMT seems to correctly parse the filenames and get the metadata. The videos play fine from within SageTV, though I haven't tested any of this extensively.

That deal seems bogus. I've been reviewing signing up for
Playon for at least three days (when the CNET article first appeared), and it was never lower on the PlayOn site than $59.99 + $15 for HD streams.
The author seems to be in error

Is it possible to view Hulu Plus streams thru Sage if you subscribe to PlayOn?

I don't see why not as if hulu is accessible to sage tv then Hulu Plus should be as well.

When viewing Hulu on sage tv the tv shows are broken down in to categories so that one categorie is # and another A, B, C, etc which is how you find the show.

I have no idea if sage tv playon script has a limit on how many shows it can pull which may affect peoples experiance as you would have to ask evilpenguin that

If you click the link in the article it shows that offer at
http://www.playon.tv/store/buy/?prmi...14-rb&rsrc=sas

And the offer is tied to Cnet as you can see the Cnet logo on the page so yes the offer I believe is real and limited as they do this from time to time

It even mentions Rick Broida of the cheapskate Blog as well so they must have lowered the price for him as a special deal

I clicked get and it asked for my email address and said - YOUR ORDER SUMMARY
Product:PlayOn and PlayLater with HD
HD for PlayOn remove
HD for PlayLater remove
Plan:Lifetime
TOTAL: $49.99

That is why it says - All you need is both PlayOn + PlayLater...and as a Rick Broida reader, you get both PlayOn + PlayLater in HD for this extra special low pricing! »

Regarding adskipper

One thing that I think is pretty important regarding adskipper that I didn't realize until I started looking into it.

1) It only works for recordings from ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX.
2) For playback, you must use Roku, Chromecast, or Ipad/Iphone.

I don't plan to use Playon for those stations because I get them over the air, and I plan to do my playback using SageTV, I don't think adskipper has any value to me.

Have you tried the Redbox channel yet? Is it included with Playon, or do you need to pay extra for access?

Any subscription channels like HBOGo, netflix need a valid account subscribed to those channels to use them. Probably same goes for Red Box as well.

Don't forget that there are a ton of playon scripts out there- 2 that I know of are http://www.playonscripts.com/
and
http://www.playonplugins.com/
where other content can be found as well as playon's channel store at
http://www.playon.tv/channel-store/

Also, when I call up any of the Playon channels (ABC, NBC, etc) via Playon/Sage plugin, the only thing that appears on screen is "video empty"
Any ideas on how to fix this, or has the author's (EvilPenquin) disappearance pretty much finished this plugin's functionality?

Try opening up playon settings in sage tv and see if rebooting playon works.

I had that stuff happen to me when playon was installed but I had not rebooted my pc after I installed playon.

At one point I actually had to totally remove sage tv and reinstall it as none of evilpenguins suggestions would fix the problem.

If you have a roku or some other device that is DNLA compatible , try using playon with that device and see if the problem is sage tv or your copy of playon.

Try starting and stopping and then re-start playon and see if that helps as well.

Also open up sage tv service control if you use it and stop playon services and playon and restart if and see if that helps

Don't forget to install playlater as well if you bought playon with playlater

Good tips, thanks. I did a couple of reboots, and then realized I was trying to access Playon in a way that didn't work. When I simply pressed the "Playon" heading in the main menu, left hand Sage listing, the individual channels appeared, as did listings for each channel. So far so good

I bought the PlayON/PlayLater combo in their deals and played around a bit with PlayLater. I was surprised to see that it essentially saves the show/movie as an MP4 file on your local hard drive - presumably with no DRM. I only did a couple of kids' TV shows - I am assuming that you can do this with Netflix as well? If so I wonder if it is legal and if they have been challenged yet?

One other thing about using the Playon plugin with Sage - after accessing a Playon channel, my Sage system gets really sluggish to the point of needing a reboot. Is there a memory leak problem created by using Playon?

did you find the whole thing was sluggish, or made your Sage install slow down to a crawl?

I believe that making a copy for personal use has always been considered 'fair use'. Of course the content providers don't want you to do this. Distributing these copies, however, would be highly illegal.

As far as I can tell, there is no DRM in the downloaded file, but there is a screen at the beginning identifying who downloaded it -- your name and your IP address. I suppose if you were a bootlegger you could just strip the first 10s or so from the video, but maybe that 'breaks' it somehow? Or maybe there is a hidden watermark in the video containing the same information so they can trace it back to you if you appears in the wrong places...

I noticed that playlater takes a LOT of CPU power, at least for HD stuff. I upgraded my CPU to an Intel Core i5-4430 Quad-Core Desktop Processor 3.0 GHz and it steal eats about 60-70% of the processing power. But everything is working well now.
