How can I prevent SageTV from recording an episode that I have ripped from a DVD?

Hi there,

I have the first 5 seasons of The Simpsons ripped from my DVD collection. Each episode is ripped as its own mkv file and named 'TheSimpsons-sXeXX.mkv'.

I understand that SageTV is smart enough not to record an episode that it has already recorded before, but how do I get it to never record episodes that I have ripped myself?

Thank you for your time
Les

Don't know if you can prevent the episodes from recording, but after it records once, mark it "Watched" and delete it, or if you catch an episode in upcoming recordings, mark it watched there.

Following this thought, is there a way to preemptively flag a show as watched before the recording ever started?

I assume there is some file somewhere that stores the watched status of all shows or something? Could I just add entries to this file for all my ripped episodes?

This way seems like it would be preferable because I don't have to monitor anything down the road. I just fix it and be done with it

Thank you again

Sure, you can flag it Watched in the Program Guide or in the Recording Schedule before it airs. But either way, there has to be an airing in the Guide for you to flag.

Watched flags are part of the airing metadata stored in the Wiz.bin database, but that's not directly editable by end users, and in any case, there has to be an airing in the Guide before you can set its Watched flag.

Could BMT(or something similar) possibly be used to add entries into the wiz.bin without an airing in the Guide?

This is something I would really want to try and figure out because I have about 20 different seasons on DVD spread across a handful of different TV shows.

I would rather have the DVD rips for episodes I already have, and then fill out the missing episodes with TV recordings.

To manually maintain this for so many episodes for so many different shows seems like it will be a pain. It would be so much easier if I could just sit down for an hour or two and add entries into my wiz.bin.

Thank you for your help

If you have them labeled with season and episode number BMT has an option to actually import those as TV Recordings. They would actually show up under Recordings instead of Videos.

Hi gplasky,

I definitely plan on using that feature with BMT.

However, my concern is that my scheduled SageTV recording for The Simpsons will still record an episode that I have ripped. And then I will actually have two separate copies of the same episode showing up under Recordings.

Or is there something that I am not understanding?

You're probably right. Even though BMT can show it as a TV Recording your file does not contain any EPG data. So Sage knows nothing about it from the "it's been recorded" perspective.
