HD PVR power supply
Just got my RMA'd HD-PVR back from Hauppauge - they gave me a new one, version F1 I believe.
Within one day, back to its' old tricks, aka turning itself off, and usually staying off. Has anyone ever had a Hauppauge power supply that was found to be the cause of this? Hauppauge didn't suggest I send the PS back in, and the DIDN'T send a new one with the replacement HD PVR. Frustrating. |

Yes, power supplies can go bad, and they can also go bad in a way, the system can almost work.
Any 5V wall wort with a higher rating and same plug/polarity SHOULD work as a replacement.

so, anything from 2.0a and up should work, but not a supply rated for 5v - 1.0a? Last edited by tvmaster2; 01-16-2011 at 12:07 PM. |

oh, and what about the voltage rating? I have a couple of wall worts with higher voltage ratings (9 to 12v) and 2a

Do not use those unless you want to see the magic smoke.

lol - at this point in time, I may ENJOY seeing the HD PVR go up in smoke. Seriously though, I read somewhere that if you can't find the same voltage, a unit that is no more than 10% higher can be substituted . . . true? Therefore, 5.5v maximum?

It really depends on the voltage regulator that is used and there are 'popular ranges' but there is no guarantee Hauppauge used one of those. I've used Vregs that allowed for 7-15V and others that allowed 3-6V. A 5V 2A wart shouldn't be that hard to locate, or very expensive That said, 5.5V probably wouldn't let the magic smoke out, but I take no responsibility if it does

I would never go more than 5% over voltage, unless I knew the exact circuit being driven. Now current, any extra (NOT under) is OK.

what about 5v, 2.5a? The extra 1/2 amp should'nt be a problem?

Thanks - it's my last gasp. After this, the HD PVR is up for sale and I'll wait for the Colossus. I found one at Radio Shack that was 5v 2.5a

Don't worry about amps as long it more then 2 amps/10 watts your fine the main thing to worry about is getting 5 volts which this needs be with in 5%-/+ of 5 volts meaning 4.95 or 5.05 volts.
This device need min of watts so if go with 2.5 amps that bump it up watts and still safe the device still only draws about XYZ watts no more or less then that. Volts X Amps equals Watts. 1 Amp at 6 volts is 6 watts 1 Amp at 12 volts is 12 watts 1 Amp at 120 volts is 120 watts Last edited by SHS; 01-18-2011 at 10:18 AM. |

I plugged myn into a 12v adapter and it started smoking. I thought it was a 5v should my hauppauge still work if i get a 5v? it was right out of box.
I plugged in my hauppauge hd pvr 1212 with a 12v accidently and it started smoking. If I get a 5v will it still work or is it just garbage now? Please help! |
