wiz.bin typical average and max sizes
I've tried hunting through the forums but haven't really found anything about what typical sizes are for wiz.bin
I realise plugins can have a big impact, but on a typical SageTV install what sort of space is needed for wiz.bin? If a plugin stores a big chunk of meta data how long before SageTV compacts the wiz.bin or does it happen immediately? Is 100 Meg max a bit on the hopeful side of things? |

I have about 1500 videos in my collection (no pictures and no music), and I have fanart, metadata for all items, and my Wiz.bin is 11M.
The size will depend more on how many items you have in your collection (ie, music, movies, pictures, etc), and if you are using metadata plugins, such as bmt, since BMT will store other information in there as well.

Remember, Sage also uses Wiz.bin to store at least the basic metadata (guide info - typically from Zap2it, plus watched status) for every show you ever record or watch via "live" TV. So, there is no upper limit, wiz.bin will keep growing the longer you use Sage.
I think somewhere in the 10-100MB range is probably typical for someone who has used Sage for a couple of years, but I don't think you can guarantee that wiz.bin will never exceed 100MB. Also, as you pointed out, as of Version 7, some plugins are now starting to store extra data inside wiz.bin. I would not be surprised to see substantially larger wiz.bin files in the coming years as more developers take advantage of this new ability. By the way, Sage also creates a backup called wiz.bak that will be about the same size as wiz.bin.

Thanks for the info.
I realise there is no sensible upper limit other than max filesize (16TB in current NTFS IIRC), but I'd expect real world usage usually ends up with a reasonably static, sensible figure. Someone who's been using Sage for a year or two should have a more accurate filesize than my system which is only a few weeks old and probably has less content. Thanks for the reminder, I forgot about the bak file. Do you know if wiz.bak is updated periodically or just at startup/shutdown? Last edited by Nelbert; 01-05-2011 at 08:05 AM. |

I am at 15MB after about 7 years, it was as high as 18MB when I had my MP3 collection imported.

Current wiz.bin size is 22.1MB and I have been using Sage since V4 (and I think I've brought my old wiz.bin along for the ride on every upgrade).
Media stats from Nielm's web: Music: 1258 albums / 112941 tracks Video: 158 files DVDs: 945 files Pictures: 3861 files I have a 1TB drive for the TV recordings. Right now it shows 165.98 hrs of recordings. Not sure how that translates to shows.
