.properties and video showing folder?

When I go to a Video folder say \MyMovies\Moviename why do I see a .properties files and the video file? Has it always been this way or is something up? I know how to manage the metadata in the BMT tool.

Thanks
Alton

I'm glad to see someone else is having this happen as I thought I was the only one. I know that I never saw the .properties listed in BMT when I was using Sage v6. Since upgrading to v7 and upgrading all of the plugins, including BMT, now I am seeing things listed twice in BMT--once for the actual movie/video and once for the .properties file. I figure it's a setting that I changed somewhere, but I can't seem to find it to change it back. I've been looking for three or four weeks and was just getting ready to admit my defeat and post when I saw your post. I sure would like to get that turned off so I can declutter BMT somewhat.

Fix

I found the issues, I had show hidden files on in windows. After I turned off hidden files the properties files disappeared from Sage\BMT.

Hmmm...I just tried that, turned off the viewing of hidden files on the WHS server as well as my workstation, but no difference here. The .properties files don't have the Hidden attribute set. Should they?

Okay I have to jump in here too.
I have also been seeing .properties files showing up in Videos\Folders and hadn't been able to figure out why.

It seems to happen when I've manually selected the metadata from the BMT interface and saved the file. I then end up with two of the same movie, one a properties file.

I also have show hidden files turned on. Thanks for the clue, I'll turn it off and see if I can get things working.

Ron

I'll just note, that BMT simply shows the files that sagetv gives it. ie, I don't read the filesystem, I read the files from the sagetv database. I don't know why you'd be seeing the .properties, but if you can reproduce the issue without any other plugins installed, then you might want to submit a bug to sagetv.

BMT doesn't create .properties files, but sagetv does, by default, when a plugin, such as bmt updates metadata using the sagetv api. There is a section in the bmt user guide , 'SageTV Settings that Affect BMT', on how to turn this off. Also, using the bmt web ui, you can remove all .properties (it's in the guide as well, under batch operations)

Hi Stuckless,

Currently if I use BMT to remove all the .properties files and then rescan (import) the library every video file is doubled in the Videos/Folders view, one for the avi and another for the .properties file.

Maybe I should ask a different question, do I need .properties files? Are they only used for adding data to the Videos/ views? If so then if I use SMM and BMT I shouldn't need them, right?

I always though that BMT was creating the .properties files and that they indicated where the fanart was located. Huh my bad. So when you lookup metadata for a movie with BMT where does it save the information?

I will look into the sagetv .properties issues some more tonight. It sounds like you may be right, something odd may be going on with sage.

Sorry for the rambling..

P.S. Thanks for all your hard work on BMT it's a great app!

That certainly doesn't seem right, and i've never seen that personally with sagetv.

I can't speak for SMM, but BMT does not need them, nor does it read them. Actually bmt will skip over files on import, if there is an existing .properties, since it assumes that something else has update the metadata.

BMT, in sage6, used to use .properties as an intermediate way to get metadata into sagetv. In sage7, there are APIs that BMT calls directly to update the metadata in sagetv's database, commonly referred to as the Wiz.Bin. So, in sage7, .properties are not used by bmt, but they may be created as a by product of writing directly to the wiz.bin.
