Migration from Sage Server 6.X to 7.x - wiz.bin and properties files?
I'm assuming if I go from Server 6.x to 7.x that I should get a copy of wiz.bin, wiz.back, and Properties and install those over the ones in the new 7.x install? Or does Sage 7.x installer account for that?
I am sandboxing it on a laptop right now; I don't want to mess up my primary server, so there is no overwrite/preservation issues on the testbed machine, but if I am going to go "hot" on my Sage Server I don't want to lose a few hundred TV shows, all my properties for my clients and extender, etc. Thanks for any recommendations.

Start by backing up your entire installation directory in case something goes wrong and you need to revert.
The simplest way to upgrade is to just install V7 over top of your existing V6 setup. That way you don't need need to worry about what to copy over. However you may need to manually uninstall old V6 plugins before installing their V7 equivalents. If you have a lot of plugins installed, you may find it easier to start over with a clean install. In that case all you want from your V6 setup is Wiz.bin. Do not copy over your old V6 properties files, since they contain installation-specific information that may not be correct for a new installation. Instead, reconfigure your video sources and UI options and whatnot through the V7 UI, and use the V7 plugin manager to install new plugins.

Wow, I guess I was having a total Homer Simpson moment there. Yeah, I will have to be careful with Properties. Problem is that I have it modded to enable things like 6.96GB/hr recording rate with my HD-PVR, not just plug-in's and such, which of course you are correct about.
Thanks again for the recommendations. Bottom line is I will make several backups of the Sage folder and all if I go to Sage 7 from Sage 6. Thanks again.

Just FYI, it appears Sage7 backs up the existing sage.properties and sageclient.properties files from your V6 install by renaming with the version number. I don't remember all the digits (posting from work) but the filename ended up something like sageproperties663.208 or something strange like that).
So if there are common properties in the new file, you can compare them to your settings in the old one. |

I just upgraded this morning (new box, new load) from an old box (v6). Copied wiz.bin and sage.properties into the program files folder before first launch - it kept all the settings I had previously except for some decoder options (audio and audio sync.)
So unless you want to keep recordings when moving to a new box, this is all you really need to do. It will even keep your tuner settings (channels etc) but didn't keep the individual tuner recording quality settings.... so just run through the settings for everything and confirm it's where you want to be. |
