confused about upgrade

I upgraded from version 5 to version 6.6 by just installing and letting Sage deal with the version 5.

When finished, I have two Sage folders, the second one being within the first one. The system works properly and both folders are having their Wizbin and Sage.Properties files updated regularily. Is that supposed to be some redundency, or is there a problem?

Sounds not quite right.. There indeed SHOULD be nested SageTV folders, but the tope level one shoud be pretty much empty:

C:\Program Files\SageTV <<< Top level 'company' folder
C:\Program Files\SageTV\Common <<< Universal SageTV items, like remote configs and such
C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV <<< The SageTV Media Center folder, should contain sagetv.exe, wiz.bin, etc.

The problem seems to be that my top level folder is called "Frey Technologies".

I tried renaming it, but that didn't work by itself, because the Properties file has that name all over it. So I edited that file to say SageTV and it looked like that did it. However, it could not find my tuning files (Dish322.ir). I assume those must be in Wizbin and I do not know how to edit it.

Tomorrow morning I will try the upgrade to version 6 again very slowly and see if there is somewhere I can tell the program to look for Frey Technologies as the top folder.

Hasn't anybody else run into that? The early versions of SageTV must have used the name Frey Technologies as the top folder?

Back in v5 the file structure was C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV. In v6 and above it is C:\Program Files\SageTV. Here is what I recommend. Uninstall 6 and make sure v5 is uninstalled and not in the add and remove programs. Copy both wiz.bins to another location in case you need to use them.

ONLY DO THIS IF BOTH wiz.bin FILES ARE THE EXACT SAME TIME AND DATE. OTHERWISE SKIP THIS. Take the SageTV folder from C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV and copy it copy it into C:\Program Files\SageTV. This should overwrite the SageTV folder at C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV.

IF YOU SKIPPED FROM ABOVE START HERE.
You should only have:
C:\Program Files\SageTV
C:\Program Files\SageTV\Common
C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV
with a single wiz.bin in C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV . Now delete C:\Program Files\Frey Technologies\SageTV. Now install v6 again. It should show you the C:\Program Files\SageTV\SageTV path for the install. Now you should be set.

If you don't see all your recordings (old and new) grab one of the backups you copied off. One of those should contain all of your recordings.

[QUOTE=gplasky;464057 Here is what I recommend.Gerry[/QUOTE]

Thank you so much Gerry for making the effort to help me. Before I get started, here is what I did last night. I re-installed a backed up version of my c-drive. I am now back at version 5. Does what you say in the second paragraph still hold?

Best bet going from the older versions like that, would be a reinstall. Keep your wiz.bin file from the vurrent install, uninstall the current folder, and delete the frey technologies folder. then install sagetv7 from scratch. Go through the setup wizard, setting up sources, etc. Don't set up your recording and import folders yet. Then, close out sage completely (including the service, if running). Copy your old wiz.bin into the Program Files\SageTV\SageTV directory, overwriting the empty one that's there.

You can then add in your recording and import folders. Sage will match the files back up with the data in the wiz.bin, and you'll be good to go.

Thank you Fuzzy. So only copy the wizbin file, not also the properties file?

I answered my own question. Of course I don't want the properties file because it contains all the references to Frey Technologies, unless I modify it.

yeah, I find it always best to start with a fresh .properties file, especially when changing major versions, and absolutely when skipping major versions..
