How To Transfer Settings From XP Client To New Win 7 Client
I have just finished building our new Win 7 Client machine for SageTV 7. If possible I would like to transfer all settings to the new machine.
I'm confused as to what Wiz.bin stores and what the Properties files stores and what I should copy to the new build. All media is stored on the WHS server. The HDPVR (our only tuner) is also on the server. But when I set up the old Client I recall making tuner and channel settings on it. I also will probably use the Microsoft Decoders instead of the Arcsoft ones. But I imagine this change could be done after all the other Sage setup is done on the Client. Right? Any help as to the steps to take would sure be appreciated. Thanks, Rod

I tried to find the post, but when upgrading hardware or software you basically make a copy of old SageTV directory.
Then you install Sage over the old. I think it keeps the original. In your case, since you installed win7, you probably lost all the directories. So you now have the new SageTV [version 7] directory. If you have your old win.biz file, try shutting down sage (stop the service if you have it running in service mode), then make a copy of the wiz.bin file that was installed on the new system (like make is wiz.bin.old or somthing). Then copy over your original wiz.bin file from your old install. If your recording directories are the same path, it should be able to remember everything. The properties is really only the settings for how the program looks/behaves. If you have not modified anything in there then you shouldn't need to move it over. The wiz.bin file is a database that tells sage where everything is located. Do some more searching through the forums...even try using Google to search for your question (it happens to be able to see into the forum). I've search for the same questions and found them, but it took some digging.

If this is just a client, it won't have a wiz.bin file (that will continue to reside on the server). All the client has for configuration is the sageclient.properties file, and I dn't recommend copying it anywhere, just configure the client in place using the wizard on first run. Then install any plugins on the client once it's up and running. the only other thing to point out, is that by default, it won't auto-connect to the server. There's an option in Detailed Setup to enable autoconnection to the server.

hedly & Fuzzy,
Thanks very much for passing on the information. Now I'm going to install Sage on the new Client. I had looked for a Wiz.bin file on the old XP Client and wondered why it wasn't there. So if I'm understanding the basics the wiz.bin stores info and locations of the recordings. The Properties file stores settings, plug ins and other info about my installation. Right? Fuzzy you don't recommend copying the Properties File over. So that means that I'll have to search through the old system settings, write down what they were, and then put them on the new Client. As well as re-installing plugins. I don't understand why Sage can't make that available somewhere for reinstall and backup purposes. This just seems a very cumbersome way to do it. Okay, rant over! To end on a positive note my Wife & I love SageTV 7 and are really looking forward to using it on our new powerful Client with Windows 7. Thanks again for your help. Rod

There really won't be all that many 'system settings' that you'll need on the client. The only settings in the client.properties file will be UI settings, which will mostly be default, and anything else will be configured when you install any plugins you are looking to use.

Decoder and renderer settings will need to be redone, but not that many. And now that I think of it I'm going to try the new Microsoft decoders that many have spoken well of. I thought I would have to redo the tuner settings with all the channel setup, but on second thought I think that's all done in the server. So you are right, it wont be that much. Glad I didn't spend a lot of time with plugins though. Especially MM for Sage, and compskip both of which I plan to use. Thanks again for your help here. Rod
