computer reboot, lost data

It feels kindof surreal asking this question but I don't remember much of this stuff. We are using v6.6.2.218 of SageTV on a Windows 7 platform. We went to reboot the computer this morning and got the setup messages for SageTV when we restarted. From memory, this indicates to me that a file has gotten corrupted somewhere but I don't remember enough to figure it out. Any assistance in getting our shows back is greatly appreciated.

Check and make sure the SageTV service actually started before any other instance of Sage starts on the PC.

If it is bin file corruption your only option is to locate a backup. Sage does automatic backup which you should be able to locate and use. Hopefully the backup isn't corrupt.

Is the backup in another location or in the same folder? Is just copying it back in the way to test?

Same folder. Labeled as .backup or .autobackup I think.

I thought it was wiz.bak as opposed to the whole folder. Are you saying that there might be a backup of the whole enchilada that may not have gotten corrupt?

If so, how do I load it, etc?

No. You're right wiz.bak. But any time you updated the SageTV software a backup was made at that time also. Sometimes the wiz.bak ends up being a backup of the corrupt wiz.bin so look in the SageTV folder for various backups of wiz.bin at various times.

No rename wiz.bin to wiz.corrupt and rename wiz.bak to wiz.bin with SageTV (service and application both stopped) then start Sagetv and see if the backup is not corrupted.

Best of luck!

crash failed sagetv startup wiz.bin fixed

gplasky and jetrel - Thank you for your assistance. I thought I was going to have to start over for sure.

With help from you guys, Here is how I got it all back on a Windows 7 computer. Note that I don't use the sageTV 'service' you mentioned for multiple TVs. I only have one so it simplifies things a little. This is what I learned.

===wiz.bin and sage.properties===
wiz.bin = recording info
sage.properties = remote control mappings (ui/rc_ lines)

Recovery from corruption generally involves only wiz.bin and wiz.bak in the following (2) folder locations.
  1. C:\Program Files (x86)\SageTV
  2. C:\Users\SageTV user\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\SageTV\SageTV
Both folders generally contain a wiz.bin file and a wiz.bak backup file. To fix a failed load of SageTV on 11/9/2010, We unsuccessfully renamed the wiz.bak file in Program Files to wiz.bin. The reason it was unsuccessful is because we were unaware that it is also necessary to do so in the VirtualStore\Program Files location as well. This approach succeeded!

Note that I have no fancy backup system for the SageTV computer. SageTV created these backups for us by default. Nice design by SageTV!

regards, snoopy
