HD300 source output resolution default selection

On the HD300, when the output resolution is set to match the source material, if the specific resolution is not available, how does it pick a default? Can this be tweaked?

I am using HDMI. In HDMI setup detection, Sage showed 480p, 720p, and 1080i. Default screen resolution is set to 1080i, the highest resolution. 480i is not detected, and if I set it I get a blank screen.

When playing back 480i material (SD broadcast, DVD), because 480i is not available, I get instead 1080i (I need to double check, but I think I get 1080i even if the default is set to 720p). Is there a way to change it so 480i default to 480p in source resolution output mode if 480i is not available? (and let my AVR do the upscaling?) Basically sort of do the 'minimal' work to bring the resolution to a supported one.

It is enabled. My question is on whether I can tweak how Sage select the next available output resolution, IF the source's native resolution is not available.

IE, source native resolution is 480i, but my TV doesn't not take 480i (480i not enabled in Sage's TV HDMI setup). Instead of getting 1080i, can I force it to 480p instead?

I believe it goes to the highest available resolution.

Which is not always desirable.

Is there a way to tweak this, or put in a feature request to have 480i goes to 480p if 480i is not available instead of the highest resolution?

there is no way to tweak this behavior by default... I've put in a feature request to sage for similar behavior and was told it should be done with a plugin... My Extender VideoOut tools plugin will include this ability at some point... i just have no idea when that point will be... my sage tinkering as taken a back seat to the rest of my life lately...

Just curious, but why? I've found deinterlacing to be the extender's weakness, not resizing/scaling.

Personally I wish that the extender would not only automatically select the matching resolution but also the matching aspect ratio.

The way the extenders currently work is that if you have native resolution switching enabled and your display aspect ratio is set to 16:9 when you play back a 4:3 480i source it will switch the output to 480i but adjust the horizontal display for 16:9 output. As a result you actually lose some horizontal detail. When I was messing around with native output I noticed that the UI still filled the entire screen while the video was the proper aspect.

This is not really a true native output.

The link refers to v7. How do I add this to v6? Manually switching it would be fine for me.

It probably doesn't make much difference, I want the scaling to be done by the ABT2010 chip in my receiver.

Ideally, I want deinterlancing to be done by the ABT2010 chip too, but apparently my receiver has a bug that it won't take 480i input because my TV doesn't take 480i input.

Thanks! Works like a charm! Being able to switch resolution during play, although not ideal, works for me!

I did notice a slight improvement in picture quality now that the HD300 is not upscaling the 480i to 1080i. Having it output 480p and have my receiver's ABT2010 does the scaling from 480p looks better.
