I don't have a large collection of movies and have a bunch of fanart that I've collected or created so is there some way of just manually adding your own fanart (by, say, dropping it in a directory somewhere)?

Yes read the wiki. Long story short you need to select the covers in the collection manager I'd you want To use your own.

Fanart.jpg=background
Poster.jpg=poster (not cover)

Both go in movie directory.

Thanks Plucky, somehow the world's worst navigator of Wiki's managed to miss the info on "fanart" the first time looking. A return to the Wiki and a simple search on "fanart" turned up a couple ways of manually adding backdrops.
