Sage Crash, Lost everything!

Last night I made the mistake of selecting sleep mode when Powerstrip wasn't done changing resolutions. SageTv Beta RC1 went black and froze. Upon re-boot there was no startup routine with the profiler and DB compression and all that. The channel lineup and EPG were gone. Re-booted again and SageTv went through the normal startup, but took me to full blown setup as if I was installing fresh.

It seems like corrupted Sage files to me. When I installed SageTv Beta RC1, I followed advice here on this forum and backed up some Sage files to another drive. Those files are from V1.4, I believe.

Can I salvage the install somehow? Maybe delete the corrupted files and restore the backups? That would lose any changed info from the last month or so. If I try to re-install over it I think I will still have to go through full setup and I will lose the database.
I would like to save all the detailed info for my recorded shows, and going through the channel lineup is a pain with so many channels on Dish Network, there are quite a few I don't use and a lot I do.

Suggestions anyone?

Thanks,
Brad

Simple answer. That's your best bet, but don't delete just move them to a different dir.

Long answer...
If it truelly is a corrupted wiz.bin file causing the problem then you can copy the backups over the current like you said, BUT you will lose all the data about shows recorded after the backups were made. Sorry. If it's just a corrupted properties file you could try just repacing it first. If this fixed it you could then slowly start adding back the custom settings from the properties file you moved to another dir.

Either way since you have a complex setup and don't want to go thru all the setup wizard stuff again your best bet may be to use your old backups. This will save you all the trouble of channel config. As for the recently recorded shows that would lose their detailed info... all I can suggest is to make more regular backups. I'm a paranoid when it come to backing up all programs. Besides as you watch them you can delete them.

Best of luck

Thanks for the input. When you say that you make regular backups, which files do you back up?

Can you give a complete list? I think there are 3 or so.

Can you give a quick description of what file stores what info?

That would be really useful.

Thanks,

Brad

The two critial files to backup are "Sage.properties" and "Wiz.bin". Everything else can be replaced by reinstalling the program (except for any channel logos you may have added).

Sage.properties is just a text file so you can open it with a text editor and see what's there. It contains all your settings that aren't show related, so no favorites, etc.

Wiz.bin has all your guide data, favorites, watched shows, etc.

Please email all of your sagetv_x.txt log files to betatest@freytechnologies.com so I can take a look at them.

Thanks.

Jeffrey,

I e-mailed you the txt. files.

What about the Sage properties autobackup file and the Wiz.bak file? Are one or both of these backups? Can I overwrite the existing, possibly corrupted files, with these?

Yes you can. The properties file is just a text file so it is probably not corrupted. However, the backup may be corrupted as well but it is worth a try.

I should have asked before, but which file stores information on shows already watched and shows marked as don't like?

Those are important along with channel setup and detailed information on the shows recored.

Wiz.bin stores all data about everything except for configuration data which is in the properties file.
