Two SageTV MC, one server...one client?

I have two licenses of SageTV Media Center v6. One of them is not being used and I was thinking that maybe one could be used as a server.

Is that possible? If you have two SageTV MC licenses can one be used as a server and the other as a client that would access the server?

I would move the tuners out of the current SageTV MC computer and put them in the server which would then also house all the music, photos, and DVD rips (legit copies of our DVDs). So the SageTV MC "client" that I have now would only access the server and show video.

Thanks,

Yes, you can do that using the -client command line switch per Appendix D of the manual.

Greg,
I noticed in the manual (and also recentely when looking through the sagetv directory) that there is the SageTVClient.exe. Is that what program is run when you use the -client command?

If I have SageTV currently set up as not a server, then is it running as a client [even though in the Task Manager it shows up as sage.exe]?

How do I get it to start up as the client if I reboot the computer? SageTV is not in the "Startup" folder.

Oh, maybe I go into setup and don't load SageTV when Windows starts, then create a shortcut with the -client command and put it in the Startup folder?

No, SageTVClient is a separate program, with a separate license. It is effectively the same as running SageTV.exe -client, but is not going to work for you with your existing server license.

A normal SageTV Media Center installation does not include SageTVClient.exe. If you have both SageTV.exe and SageTVClient.exe in your install directory, then there's something fishy about your setup, like maybe you installed the full Media Center software over top of an older SageTVClient installation, without uninstalling Client first.

Running SageTV.exe with the -client option just enables it to connect as a client to another server instead of acting as a server itself. It does not run a different executable.

So the one piece of the puzzle is how to do I get sageTV MC to go into client mode if the computer reboots?

You already answered that one yourself:

Greg...thanks again.

Some of this became moot as I decided to buy an upgrade license for SageTV MC and a SageTV Client license. The client license was actually $10 cheaper than upgrading the MC license, so there was really no reason to upgrade the other MC.

So eventually everything will be upgraded to v7

I am working with the extra v6 MC in server mode. Time to try that out.
