Minor complaint about the remote

Why would they put the fast forward and rewind buttons as small buttons in the middle of a block of about 30 buttons. In the dark (only TV light) it is near impossible to do basic functions on the remote.

Am I overlooking an easy way to play, pause, rewind, and fast forward videos with the remote? Is the answer to just gat a logitech Harmony?

ps. I love my HD-300 and am amazed by how well it works.

While I agree with you, I think you'll shortly find out that you have the buttons memorized and can hit them without looking (or in the dark).

By the way, I don't know if you are using the scroll "forward/scroll backward" FF and RW buttons, but I recommend using the jump1 and jump2 buttons. Program one for a short period (5 or 10 seconds?), and the other for a larger period (1 or 2 minutes). Between the two, once you get used to the remote, you'll be jumping to right where you want to be in no time.

That's what I did... I could never get used to the tiny ff/rew buttons. Having a harmony helps with other things as well -- One button to turn everything on, and switch to the correct inputs, which makes it easier for the wife, inlaws, etc, to watch tv. Also, the IR emitter is more powerfull. I got the harmony when I had an HD100. The HD100 has a fairly weak IR receiver, and the harmony's IR emitter was much stronger than the HD100 remote, so that was another benefit.

I've had similar problems with my remotes.

I decided to use an exacto knife and shave a button down (~2mm) for reference so I could feel where on the pad I am. In my case, I shaved the FF because that's the one I've used most.

I never look at the buttons anymore.

I never look at my remote anymore either and use the fast forward and skip buttons seemlessly. Even my wife says she does not think about them anymore. The new tv power/volume buttons on the remotes, which arrived earlier today WOOT, allowed me to store away the tv remotes in the kids playroom and our bedroom, so no more dual remotes. I use a MX700 in the great room where all of the home theater equipment is. But if you just have a tv/sagetv box set up in a room like I do in a couple other locations, the new and improved remote is a perfect fit.

I think the stock remote is totally wrong for DVR operations, for a device like that the D-Pad and Transport buttons need to be the most prominent and reachable with a thumb without having to slide the remote up and down or look at it.

I also tried Harmony but was not impressed, I purchased the Universal R7 and it does a much better job than the stock remote:

I am also going to try this one next
