Noob question about ripping

Sorry, but really, I've never had a need to rip DVD's so it's an honest question. I just finished building my first Sage machine, and wanted to rip my DVD collection to use with MyMovies.
I'd like any opinions on what's the best/easiest ripper. Something simple would be nice. Couple side questions though:
- Is it harder to rip with the menus?
- (Comes from above) What if it's an collection of episodes? Can you set it to rip each individual episode, or just rip it with menus?
- What's the best format/extention to rip to? (To work with Sage/MyMovies?)

Again, sorry, but at least I warned noob in the title! Any tips appreciated.

Start here:

http://wiki.mymovies.dk/My%20Movies%20Guide.ashx

Then especially read this:

http://wiki.mymovies.dk/Cataloging%2...%20Ripper.ashx

You want to use MyMovies/AnyDVD as the ripper. Rip DVD's into folder structure, and Blurays into ISO's.

SageTV: v.7.1.9 with SageMyMovies (MyMovies for WHSv1 2.00, MyMovies for Windows Media Center 7/Collection Management v.4.02 on clients)
DVD: Clearplay 747HD - filters out the filth I don't want to hear/see; works great with the HD-PVR to archive cleaned-up movies that our whole family can enjoy.

I like to use SlySoft AnyDVD with CloneDVD2. I save them as DVD files, including the VIDEO_TS directory path, each in a movie name subfolder. The root path is set to be Sage's videos import directory. Under Sage 6.6 w/ SageMC, I used to do an IMDB search on each added movie to save clipart, and movie details.

For some reason Sage 7 won't save the IMDB information. Could be a permissions problem with my setup, but I haven't looked into it yet.

My cousin says he likes Handbrake. He's a Mac guy, and not a Sage user. I haven't tried it, but it may work, and it's free!

Yes the mymovies method is going or be the easiest because it is completely handsfree no interaction required, but as others have said there are also free options. If you can find DVD shrink it was always one of my favorite.

Mostly the folks here are using AnyDVD or DVDFab. I like/prefer AnyDVD since it can be used in conjunction with the program of your preference to remove menus etc. Also, AnyDVD can be used to playback commercial DVD’s on extenders. This is a big plus, because AnyDVD does the decryption on the fly.

I’ve heard good things about DVDFab too, it just comes down to personal preference. It’s more of an all in one package and it doesn’t like to play nice with AnyDVD.

The best format and most compatible will be ripping to DVD folder format. I would keep the file uncompressed on your HD. Once it’s on your hard drive you have options to transcode it for space preservation if you wish.

It’s probably the same to rip with or without menus to be honest both are very easy to do. I know that AnyDVD will allow you to rip the entire disc menus and all, but as Plucky mentioned MM does have a slick process too. You still need AnyDVD though for the MM function. If memory serves me I did use that mechanism and it seemed terribly slow. I think I even re-ripped the disc with DVDShrink and that was much faster... I do like DVDShrink better still, mostly because I only rip the main movie and dump the extra audio tracks etc (I don't need the spanish audio track eating up MB's on my hard drive)

If you want to remove the menus and basically re-author the DVD you’ll need another program to do that. DVDShrink is an oldie but a goodie. I use it in combination with AnyDVD. It’s easy and free. I’ve also used Nero recode, it’s pretty similar to dvdshrink. If you decide upon AnyDVD they have a piece of software too, CloneDVD. You may be able to pick up a bundled price from them too.

I use Free DVDFab to do my ripping. Works great and it's free! I usually just rip the main track for DVD movies. For TV series that I have on DVD I will rip the entire disc so I have the menus. I have plenty of HD space so the rip size doesn't matter....yet.

I use MyMovies & SMM for collection data.

I also use Handbrake to rip these movies to mp4 files but that for my iPod and not Sage.

This setup works well for me. It all comes down to the format that you want and what software you're comfortable with.

Quick question. I've been reading and want to make sure I understand. With AnyDVD installed I would do ripping through the Collection software. With Fab, would I rip directly with Fab?

Correct MyMovies has to have the encryption removed to rip (what anydvd does). Make sure any get the hd version if you plan on ripping blu rays.

If you are only doing dvds I would really look at dvd shrink it is free.

There are some (newish) DVDs that DVD Shrink can't handle. It's my preferred program, but I sometimes have to use AnyDVD together with it to get the restrictions removed.

AnyDVD is updated on a seemingly weekly basis, while DVD Shrink (I don't think) is still supported or updated.

Ditto. I rip the entire movie including menus with CloneDVD2. The only things I exclude are foreign language audio tracks and foreign language subtitles. My average size per disc comes in at about 6GB per.

I prefer menus as it is just like we put the DVD into the drive when we start a movie.

Remember if you are ripping subtitles to NOT exclude forced subtitles. Forced subtitles are subtitles you would see normally if you were watching the movie in the theater.

What about DVD43? Does that work with MyMovies? It does the DVD decryption on the fly.
