Metadata Names/Values
I noticed that you've changed/added some metadata values/meanings since we originally discussed the topic way back when. Can you post an official list of the values you're using now along with their meanings in a sticky so we can get this standardized again?

I don't think that I've changed any, if I have, it's been unknowingly. Here's the list of Custom Metadata properties that I'm maintaining. Here's the list of Sage Read/Write properties that I support. And here's the list of Sage Read Only properties.

BTW, now that I think about it, I think that IMDBID and Fanart were 2 new properties that I added.

What is the distinction you're making between Title and MediaTitle?

Title is the SageTV "display" title. ie, whatever you put in this field will be displayed in the STV. The MediaTitle is what is used to calculate fanart directory. ie, a Title may be, "House - Land of the Living", but the MediaTitle would simply be "House". MediaTitle serves no other purpose other than being a title that is easy to use for Fanart lookups.

So then what do you use for organizing by metadata in the VFS?

Edit: Also, unrelated, but are your .properties files supposed to be so messy or is something going wrong?

bmt/phoenix will not write to .properties. Those updates are a result of many calls to SetMediaFileMetadata. BMT may end up making a large # of calls to that API when it's setting metadata, and even more calls when it sets lists of data. When they are loaded (only during a forced sagetv refresh, then java can sort out the all the data). You can turn off the creation of the .properties files by setting the sagetv7 property, update_external_properties_files_on_metadata_changes to false. (you can change this from the web ui as well). Personally I'd leave them there, since it will show a history of all the changes you've made to your .properties.

That explains why a lot of my stuff isn't playing well with the VFS. I had previously generated my .properties files such that the Title was the display name I wanted to show up in the video browser (i.e. - Angel 1x01 - City Of) and but I set MediaTitle to be the name that I wanted to use for future metadata organization (i.e - Angel).

Older releases of bmt did the same, but in Sage7, I don't create a formatted title, since I think that is really up the UI. But, I added a GetFormattedTitle api call to phoenix that will return a formatted title (ie, Angel 1x01 - City Of) based on the values of Title, EpisodeName, Season, etc. (you provide a title mask for how you want the title to look under various conditions)

BTW, a "grouper" could easily be written in java or javascript to work with your title names. You could then create your own custom view and use your custom grouper. When phoenix is released, we'll hopefully have some documentation on how to create custom views using the vfs.
