Do I get it ???

Hi,

Due to the lack of a trial for Linux I want to see if I get the model straight.

Linux Media Server --> equivalent of the Windows version where you can set up all your tuners and what not.

Placeshifter --> Software equivalent to a HD 200 or client set up.

I have recently given Ubuntu 10.04 a spin and inthe past as well and for my Atom powered mini pc's LINUX just seems a whole heck of a lot more responsive.

I know it has been said before but at the very least LINUX and Windows (MAC) licenses should be interchangeable. I had a windows home server license but I guess I need to upgrade but I no longer use WHS.

Anyone care to post some screenshots of their LINUX set up ?

There isn't really a screen to shoot.. It is all CLI based. But you understand the gist.

there is no gui for the server side if you logged in via freeNX of anything? I understand editing the sage.properties in gedit or what not. I assume the client has a GUI?

The client is a placeshifter, same as Windows/Mac. I use my Mac to configure the server. Anything server CLI is done via SSH. One thing to keep in mind, Placeshifter doesn't do DVD folders. I have found the Linux server to be very reliable with TV's being connected via Extender. B

In a sense, the placeshifter / client / extender is the GUI. Once the server is set up, it just runs, and you can do everything you need - changing settings, etc. - from any of those places. The GUI looks the same on all of them. About the only thing I've needed to do via the shell is the occasional restart of the server, generally because something changes after a system update or something like that. In terms of reliability, my system goes weeks or months without a restart.

Personally, I never run the placeshifter on the server.

Another (former) SageTV for Linux user here. As others have said, the install and the server is all CLI, it's a daemon, like a web server or an SSH server. You can configure it with manual editing of the properties file, but don't.

Any client (an extender HD200, a Windows client, the Mac Client, the place shifter for Linux) will give you a GUI to configure just like you did on Windows. If you have the Windows license and app installed still, you can use that.

The GUI and overall look and feel is identical. I can't think of a single piece of Sage functionality that was different (besides paths, drive letters, etc). There are some issues with plugins. Some plugins seem to assume Windows in their design and don't work well on the Linux server. But, as a counter example, SageMC works great!
