Exclamation The Karate Kid 2010

Someone please explain why they would name the movie Karate Kid if Jackie Chan is from Hong Kong. The movie looks like it's takes place in China. Karate is Japanese form. And just saw the trailer and they say I'm going to teach you Kung Fu.

It should be named THE KUNG FU KID.

Re-make my A$$.

Yeah, I thought that was odd as well.

But as a case in point I teach Kenpo, Arnis, and Small Circle Jiu Jitsu. But when I talk to non-martial artists I still just call it all Karate because that is the term they are familiar with. I think most people are also familiar with Kung Fu, though, so I guess that argument doesn't hold.

The original Karate Kid re-introduced a whole generation to martial arts and dojo enrollments skyrocketed afterward. Even though the movie itself wasn't that great, I still find it a bit saddening that they have to mess with something that has become part of our cultural awareness. Then again, I guess there aren't many kids under 20 today that would understand "wax on, wax off".

Aloha,
Mike

The Karate Kid is the name of the franchise... considering what was done with the Star Wars franchise and the 'prequels', I can't complain too much with a little liberty come remake time... It's not like the Karate Kid 1-3 were 'accurate' representations of Japanese martial arts either...
