Recording list for shutdown

I would like to be able to completely shutdown the computer automatically if there are no programs to be recorded past a specified time. Is there a file that can be read which lists the current programs to be recorded?

Assuming this includes at least the time and date of each currently scheduled recording, a simple program could be written which could shutdown the computer if there is nothing to do.

Perhaps someone already knows of such a program.

SageTV already has this feature built in, I think its under Customized Settings in the Detailed Settings menu. Read the PDF manual for more info.

Why not just setup power management to let the computer Sleep? Sage will wake the PC for subsequent recordings.

+1 for sleep.
If you have the PC auto shutdown, how will it turn back on?
Suspend to hard disk sleep will render your PC as good as off. Suspend to ram will start back up faster, and if you have a good power supply/mobo, will use only a small fraction of the power to keep the RAM alive. It is my suggestion.

almost but not quite

It would seem the built in functions in SageTV will allow the PC to be in standby but not in hibernate mode. In standby mode, this pc even with the disks shut down, is still in the 90 W class. The plan is to use the BIOS auto turn on at 6PM every day, see if there is anything to do and then shut down in an hour if not.

This requires two things, First it needs to know if there is anything to do, secondly it needs to know if SageTV is viewing an existing file.

Clearly this could be built in but it does not seem to be.

At the present time, I have the PC automatically shutdown at 12:30AM as that is past anything I would want to record.

I expect there are Motherboard, video board/power supply combination that have a very low power in standby (under 10 W) but this is not a thing in the specifications.
If anyone knows of a proven combination, I am also listening.

Sage Job Queue could probably shut down your PC for you.

You sure your machine doesn't support S3?

Where can one find any documentation about the "Job queue"?

As far as I can see, there is no S3 support. It appears that "standby" is really S1 on this system and it saves very little.

It's a plugin created by Slugger. Here's the thread:

Perhaps a bit more than is needed

Thanks
I looked at the job queue documentations. While I think it could do what I want, getting there sounds like a very time consuming project.

I had this strange hope that there was a nice file somewhere that SageTV kept up to date showing the current list of scheduled recordings. If this existed, then my project could be done in a simple independent program.

Sage stores that kind of info in its internal database, not in external text files.

However there's a scripting add-on that should allow you to query the database and retrieve the recording schedule in a form that you can use.

i have a very involved process for doing this http://bit.ly/aDq0NR it takes into account if any extenders are running or if someone is actively using RDP on the sage server. i also have startup & shutdown scripts that sync the recordings to a NAS drive so we can use the HD200s in stand alone mode if the sage server is off. as a result, our sage server is powered off around 90% of the time.

There is hope

It sounds like the scripting add-on may be the way to go. some time when I have a chance I will give it a try.

+1 for sleep.

Here is my success story: How to wake your PC with a remote + USB-UIRT

I have tested this on my system and
Sage did wake up the pc 3 minutes before the recording was to start.

When my PC is running, it draws around 140W. When asleep, it is less than 10W. In interest of full disclosure, it took a lot of trial and error to get the proper setup to allow SageTV to do this reliably.

The biggest factor in getting low sleep power is the OS - Vista or Win7 is necessary (power is one of the big improvements made over XP). I am on Vista.

I will list the components I have but they were not really put together with pwoer in mind (I would bet you could do better with a motherboard with integrated graphics). Athlon 64 5200 processor, Radeon 4850 graphics, Asus M3A32-MVP Deluxe motherboard, WD Caviar Greenpower harddrive (1TB).
