How to view live video files?

Hi all!

I have 4 security cameras and I have standalone recording system for these cameras. This system has a harddrive that stores all videos. I am able to connect to this system using USB cable and get access to all the video files.

I tried to add this harddrive like an additional folder to Media Center -> Videos. And I can view all videos there. But when I try to view the last video file (this file is live recording) I can't reach live picture. It stops at the time I've started SageTV.

The question is: the file is recording live and is updating every second. How can I play this file live using SageTV?

Unless you write an addin for Sage yourself, that's not doable.

If you could split the video feed coming from the cameras and then run it through an analog tuner in your Sage server then you could watch the live picture but this isn't ideal since you would need 4 tuners unless you could come up with a video switch that you could control remotely.

If you can get a live feed from these cameras to your PC then it is possible that you could use something like VLC to create a stream that you could then get into Sage using something like the Sage Web Radio and TV encoder. Or you could use an additional tuner in "loopback" mode where you send the TV out from a PC (assuming that your video card has TV out) into a tuner in your Sage PC.

Thank you for your answers!

I am now using DVBdream with SageDDmodule plugin to get access to my DVB-S2 tuner. There is a good reason for me to use DVBDream. I introduced some changes to Sage.properties to make DVBDream visible for Sage.

As far as I can see this integration is done by using same recording folder. When I select some channel using SageTV this info sends to DVBDream. DVBDream start recording corresponding channel. I can see this new file in the common recording folder. SageTV starts to play this file.

I have already a system that can produce these files. I want only SageTV to play them. SageTV can play older recordings, but it can't play the file that is being recording.

Do you think I'm able to do such customization using SageTV Studio? As far as I understood Studio may be used only for GUI customizations.

DVBDream has a network encoder plugin, and one thing it does is support the (IIRC) "GetFileSize" call, which Sage uses (for network encoders) to determine the length of a file and update the length/size on the fly.

AFAIK, there's nothing similar for imported media.

OK. I see. So now I need to create my custom program that will be similar to network encoder plugin and I need to add a new custom page to SageTV GUI to make the nice access to my cameras. This page will be integrated with my new program.

Could you give me some additional info about creating such network encoders? I have a lot of programming experience and I am sure I'll be able to do it. I need only some info to start.

I think there's a GPL Network encoder or two floating around, that's really where my experience ends
