SageTV v's Tivo's New Premiere Set-top Box
"A set-top box with 320GB of storage will be available for US$299, and will record up to 45 hours of high-definition programs. A box with 1TB of storage will be available for $499. The boxes are based on the Linux operating system, and the software interface is built on the Adobe Flash platform. The boxes will support Wi-Fi 802.11 g/n to pull content from broadband connections"
Looks like 2010 will be an interesting year. http://www.pcworld.com/article/19064...ogramming.html Last edited by Crunch; 03-02-2010 at 11:08 PM. |

interesting why? So people can be ripped off $200 for an upgrade from a $50 320GB drive to an $80 1TB drive? i think what is interesting is that they will probably get a ton of people to pay for that...

Yeah to me TiVo isn't competition for sage for two reasons
1. They don't have a true whole house solution. Sure you can access recordings on multiple units but no share guide and schedule. 2. Monthly or lifetime service fees are way to high in my opinion. Sure TiVo is a great dumbed down ui fo the average user and I loved my first TiVo from the early 2000's but times have changed and TiVo has failed to get it's software on major sattelite and cable dvrs where it could have been very sucessfull. As for fuzzyi couldn't agree more but look what Microsoft an Sony charge for their hard drive jumps on their systems. I am still amazed 360 has such a small hard drive being they are trying to push live to sell digital entertainment so heavily. Talk about a drm lockdown buy something only playable on your 360 no thanks... |

I certainly didn't mean that the rip off practice was limited JUST to TiVo.. but I don't own a 360 or PS3 either...

No, interesting because of the flash-based interface and access to all the online content. If they could come up with something just like the HD200 (small client without hard drive that just allows you to access the main box with no subscription fees) then it would be pretty compelling (although I agree the subscription fees are pretty ridiculous).

I just think that in this community, it really isn't that compelling...

Not at all compelling considering the PlayOn plugin.

Yeah, i also thought it was pretty slow. I also dont' see the advantage of using something like flash, unless the plan is to open it up to 3rd party advertisers. Bleh...
