Online Services Request

I like to browse news clips and only watch the stories i'm interested in, for example:

http://www.cnn.com/video/

is there anyway sagetv can show thumbnails of these videos and watch only the ones i click on?

i'm sure other news sources organize their videos this way also.
this way, you don't have to listen to a whole podcast to find the news you're interested in.

i guess you already know the stv update feature needs to be automated. it took me 20 minutes and maybe 60 clicks to go through about 6 stv updates to update for 3 months. if i have to do this every 3 months, it's going to be
a real pain.

thanks

is this request in the wrong forum? i'm sure this is a feature that a lot of people would want. msnbc and fox have news videos on specific topics on their main websites. i'm sure people are watching them and want to watch them on sagetv

First, this is the user forum, not official SageTV support, nor is it the place to make official feature requests. No harm done, mind you. It's a very common mistake. So, my guess is that either not that many users find it appealing (my personal opinion) or they think it might be a bit much for a user to create as an import.

If you really want to request this as an official feature, then go here and fill out a support request, or email them at support@sagetv.com.

is there a generic plugin that can pull all videos from a webpage into thumbnails? if not, i think it would be a good idea, since it could apply to any topic, not just news.

Have you looked at using the PlayOn plugin to get CNN videos? I know they support CNN video.

Here is the PlayOn plugin Link

If you decide to go with Playon check out a plugin done by evilpenguin called Plugin: PlayOn in Online Services. I have used it for a while now and it works well. Check it out... http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44446 One of the selections is CNN that brings up all of the video selections.

They sometimes offer coupon discounts: I know they had a half price coupon available not that long ago. But to be honest, Considering it is only a one time charge, and how their updates are free, $40 wasn't so bad for me. I appreciate the product and their responsiveness to issues and requests, and was happy to support them.

Nonetheless, like I said, they sometimes offer coupons. You may be able to google it and find something.

playon says they offer discounts in their newsletter. ill probably wait for one of those.

hard to justify paying $40 for playon when sagetv costs $40. sagetv probably takes 100x development costs vs playon

Just curious, how did you get SageTV for $40? Trying to get a friend on board and he's balking at the cost. I'm about to buy it for him.

strange playon can only download lists when windows firewall is off.
i have even set C:\Program Files\MediaMall\MediaMallServer.exe as
an exception in windows firewall as specified in faq and it still wont work.

i guess i can't buy playon until it works with windows firewall

Can you place a support ticket while on their trial period? Otherwise, I would post this issue on their forum:

http://www.playon.tv/forum

They're typically pretty good about responding there, and admins regularly patrol posts.

It's a team effort and I am glad I could help! You had mentioned something about not wanting to pay $40 for PlayOn. I can hands down tell you this is one of the better Plugins and Apps for SageTV. It has changed everything about how I use SageTV. If I miss a show I really don't care. If I want VOD from Amazon Viola it is there. It extends my Netflix account exponentially!

I did a survey for PlayOn a while back and it looks like they have a good deal in store. But I also think SageTV is a steal too... don't tell them I said that...
