Specifying tuner to record with
Is this an option with Sage TV? (Via the recording menu or program guide)
I'm concerned that if I decide to record NBC at 8pm it will choose my tuner card that is currently plugged into my STB. Then if I decide to record HBO at that same time, it will try and use my second card (note i have removed HBO from that cards lineup) and it won't be able to record because HBO isn't on that cards lineup and and card 1 is currently busy with NBC (which i could have done with card 2). |

I believe the cards priorities get set by the order you entering them in. So first setup the tuner that has the most channels (ie: the non stb one) then setup the additional tuner. This should in thoery make it select to record from the non-stb tuner first, and only use the stb tuner if no other tuner is available.

But taking the example above - if it has already started recording a show on Card 1 that's available on both Card 1 and 2, and then you want to record something concurrently that's only available on Card 1, does it automatically switch the original recording from Card 1 to Card 2 so that it can record the second show on Card 1?

If you schedule the 2 shows before either one starts recording, SageTV will work out the scheduling to fit the one show on the tuner that has that channel.
As far as I know, a recording won't change to the other tuner if you schedule another show that needs that tuner while it is currently recording. Both of my tuners use the same list of channels, so I can't test it. That would be interesting to know if someone can say that it could switch like that. OK... anyone can _say_ it... I mean say it & have it be true. Another thing to do is set the encoder_merit for your preferred tuner to a higher value than the other one in sage.properties, while SageTV is not running. (I haven't used this property, but I have seen many comments on it.) Then, that tuner will be used first, if the channel is available on that tuner. - Andy |

Great information to have.
I should just keep it in mind that I need to pick my recordings in advance. The priority souds like a value to make use of as well. Attempt to use the card with the limited channels first for recordings, and only use the other if it's specific channels aren't needed. Similar related question Is there a hot key or hauppauge remote button to flip which interface you're viewing? Thanks for all the info so far guys. |

Make the smaller tuner the high priority one. Then it will always record there if possible first. If IR is getting something this may mess up, however.

Back on this topic.
When I configured the specific tuners, I told the one that has a direct connection to the wall (no STB) that it couldn't get channels about 87 (or so). After a reboot, when I try changing channels to channels higher then 87, it's now attempting to do so with the tuner that can't receive these channels. Pre-reboot, it was doing most all the work with the one plugged into the STB. Anythoughts on what would cause this? |
