Away from home - Power on Cable Box

We are snowbirds. In the past when we were in Florida, if the cable box lost power I had to have my son drive 20 miles to our home to turn the box back on. I have now taught SageTV the "Power cycle" command for the cable boxes. Now all I have to do is access setup in Placeshifter and "Test" the previously taught command.

Even though my HD-PVR's are rock solid, as a precaution, I have the units plugged into the switched outlets of the cable box. I can now remotely power cycle the cable boxes which in turn power cycles the HD-PVR units.

The SageTV server is set in it's BIOS to reboot on a power failure.

That's a pretty simple yet excellent idea!

Thanks for sharing. I wonder if someone could write an STVi plugin that would look for the "halt in recording" error for the HD PVR and "power cycle" it that way. That might be a clunky, but functional way to recover from HD PVR lockups.
