I finally unloaded my C-64 and C-128 maybe three years ago during a move. They still worked except I had to take the top off the C-64, (I think it had heat issues--I had done some MB modifications like an extra SID chip). But the whopping 40M HDD I had for it still worked! My plan was to keep them around to show my kids what computers were like when I was their age, but I decided they really wouldn't care and all that stuff was taking up a bit of space...I also had some 15-year-old 486 systems that still worked, (not sure how old the HDDs were on those, but newer). Compare that to my brand-new Shuttle system that blew a capacitor after 1.5 years...

True, the new systems seem a bit more short-lived, but at the same time, I think that C-64 only drew like 25W or something like that.. not a lot of load on the power components... nothing like the new systems are pushing.

Yeah, it's not apples-to-apples. OK, the capacitors on my HD100 didn't last much longer and that's probably a more fair comparison .
