R5000 and HD-PVR together
Anyone running one or more of each?
I'm tempted to replace one of my HD-PVRs with an R5000, to get the perfect picture quality of the latter vs slight degredation with the HD-PVR. Any thoughts? My server is WHS if that matters. Thanks. |

I have one of each, I prefer the HD-PVR because I can catch the closed captions.

Thanks, You don't find the R5000 recordings to be noticeably (but not dramatically) crisper?
There's a noticeable difference in sharpness between the direct Dish output and the HD-PVR recordings on my 130" PJ screen. As one would expect the difference is less noticeable on my 52" LCD TV. |

I can tell there is a difference, but the HD-PVR picture always looks great. I can not say that I believe the R5000 has a better picture.
I was hoping that the recorded R5000 files would have the Closed caption data, but after trying every method I could for over a year to extract the data, it appears that the R5000 captures before the CC data. So at some point I will be selling my R5000, which is external of the VIP211 receiver. It is in it's own enclosurer. |

I have both and am ready to pitch the r5000 out in the snow. Screw the quality, I just need the damn thing to stop locking up randomly. It went from being my most bulletproof tuner to the absolute biggest headache I have had in my 2.5 years with sage.

I also have both and have pretty much stopped using the r5000 due to reliability issues. The HDPVR is a PITA to set up, but it's been pretty solid since I got it working. The picture quality is slightly less than the r5000, but the Dish network picture quality ain't all that great to start with. IMO there's no reason to replace an HDPVR based on picture quality of the R5000.
