Best Free Software to convert DVD Rip VOB to H.264 format??
I have my entire dvd library ripped as video_TS folders with vob and ifo files and recently purchased a networked bluray player that also is a dlna client. I have tried multiple websites and suggestions looking for freeware to convert my vob files into a single H.264 encoded file such as .avi/mp4. I would like something with a GUI, relatively fast (not 12 hrs for one dvd), built in encoder, at least 720p resolution. Have tried ffmpgdx, handbrake, super, joinvob and others and havn['t found one that works well.
a simple post with suggestions would be great. what's your favorite?? |

Hi,
Divx works great with Vobs. I use anydvd, and then rip/convert the vobs directly to movies on my hard drive. Divx comes in two flavors, the out of the box drag and drop version and doctordivx, an open source version with more options but an easy to use GUI> Here is the link to the commercial version with a free trial. http://www.divx.com/en/win Here is the link for the free public developed version which is better, and free. This version has not yet updated to the 264 codec, it should soon. http://sourceforge.net/projects/drdivx/ Personally I bought and installed the drag and drop version and then the doctor version. I do not know if you need to "buy" the drag and drop version for the free version to work, but I would guess not. That being said, I wish that Sage would incorporate a way to convert vobs from the sage UI, all the tools are there under the hood. It would be easy to do if someone tried. Any other good programs out there? Last edited by Homebuilder; 12-26-2009 at 05:25 PM. |

also the program should be able to open a video_ts folder and select all the necessary vob files in the right order to make a single movie file with 5.1ch sound from the dvd files without having to select individual files.

Handbrake does that. Time depends on CPU. I'm at about an hour, but that's an i7 920.

Out of curiosity, what brand/model of networkable Blu-ray player did you go with?

I agree with Matt. I use handbrake for converting Video_ts folders for use on my iPod Touch all the time (almost daily).

Windoze. I made my own settings, started with the High, then changed a BUNCH of defaults (I like GOOD playback on a HD screen, but don't have the space for the whole DVD, currently 1/3 to 1/2 size). MKV.
