Moving From WHS to Vista - How to Restore

For certain reasons, I am separating my WHS server from my media machine and will be going to Vista for SageTV. I do backups routinley of the sagetv directory. My question is how can I best restore a WHS backup to a Vista machine? Are the installs that different. Can I just copy over wiz and properties files? I also use SageMC.

Any guidance would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you are moving your SageTV server from WHS to Vista, why not use disk imaging for backup and recovery instead? You can then totally recover the system to different points in time in the past when the system was working perfectly.

You could. What you have to watch out for is how your hardware gets enumerated. If you just copy everything over from WHS after you install Sage on your Vista machine that is the quickest way to get any plugins and customizations restored. That being said what you have to be careful with is the .properties file. Tuner cards and encoder numbers may end up being different. Also look out for file paths. Understanding it may work but knowing you may just have to remove all your video sources and set them up again along with any of your import paths will save you hours of troubleshooting if you expected it to just work. Keep these changes in mind for any configuration files outside of the .properties files too.

Something to add is sage is staying on the same system. WHS is moving to a new machine and Vista will be installed on my existing SageTV machine.

With that said, if I just install SageTV windows version on Vista and then copy over my backup from SageTV WHS edition, will this work?

It should. Caveats still apply because you're installing the hardware with different drivers. You still need to be aware of this with using the .properties file.
