Sage TV software suddenly won't open

Been running Sage TV 5.0 for years with relatively few problems. (Didn't want to upgrade as the system was satisfactory.) A couple of days ago, I noticed my service was not working and found I could not get my Sage on my computer to come up either.

I click on the icon, the hourglass flashes for a fraction of a second then disappears and nothing happens. Same result for service control.

all my other applications start and run normally--as far as I have checked. Have rebooted numerous times. Have just uninstalled and reinstalled Sage 5.0, and it still does exactly the same thing.

My guess is that this is a "computer" issue as I think I have occasionally seen the same thing with starting IE and some other applications in the past. But, nothing like this is happening with any other applications.

As I have uninstalled and reinstalled sage and get the same problem, I'm wondering what to do next??

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks. --Marty

I had the same problem happen with SageTV some time ago. I had an image, when the system was working perfectly. I recovered to the image, and the problem went away and did not return. I assume you don't have an image, so it's tougher to fix the problem.

You might try upgrading to the current version of SageTV. I don't know if your license covers the current version. The improvements are worth the upgrade, and it might also fix your problem. Hopefully, the solution won't require re-installing your operating system and everything else!

Try reinstalling an up-to-date version of Java. Complete failure to start often turns out to be a Java issue.

Leaving you none the wiser as to what caused it, or how to prevent it from happening again. I know you're a big fan of imaging, and I don't disagree. But sometimes it can be enlightening to do some actual troubleshooting first, before wiping out the evidence with an image restore.

That's true. You might be able to fix the problem the old-fashioned way. You might also be able to determine the cause of the problem. However, it's all downtime until the problem is fixed.

Another option is to take an image with the problem. Then recover to an image when the system was working perfectly. You can try to analyze the problem later when it is convenient time for a SageTV outage.

Just before you want to analyze the problem further, take another image of the system in a good working state, then recover back to the image that captured the problem. If the problem cannot be fixed the old-fashioned way, then you can always recover back to the last good working status image.

All of the images could also be verified with recoveries on on spare hard drives, if you need to verify the recoveries during the whole process to give you complete assurance that the recoveries will be successful for good and bad working states.

In reality, unless you have a lot of extra free time, you'll never go back to try to analyze the bad working state again. So the underlying cause will not be known, but you won't care because you saved your time and eliminate extra downtime. If the problem occurs again, then it could be analyzed further, but the problem might not occur again. In my case, the problem never reoccurred.

You would need to enable debug for Sage in the .properties and also look in the event viewer for Windows to actually see what the errors may be. Another thing to look at is if you're running Sage 5 you probably have been running older versions of java along the way. If you updated java at anytime the install of the new version never removed the older version. If you look in add/remove program you may see many versions of java. Best thing to do is uninstall them all. Make sure any java diretories under Program Files is deleted. Then install the latest java and see if your issue goes away.

No old and new java reinstall fixed it.

Thanks all and especially gplasky.

Uninstall of old javas and reinstall of latest did the trick. Sage is now working and didn't have to reconfigure.

thanks,
Marty
