HD Resolution 1080i, 720i, 480i

Recently, I've been checking "View Recording Details" on several HD recordings and noticed that the HD records are not always in 1080i. For example on the HBO HD channel, many recordings are in 480i and some in 1080i, recorded with a HD-PVR. Local broadcasts are 720i and 1080i using a HDHomerun.

I am I just seeing the reduced quality of the content providers? My first thought was that my HD-PVR was not configured correctly or my HD cable box was only providing 480i video to the HD-PVR, until I saw some of the programs were recorded in 1080i.

I did change the recording quality on the HD-PVR for the largest video file size, and it does seem to improve the resolution.

Perhaps your STB is set to output at the native resolution of the broadcast instead of a fixed HD resolution & HBO is broadcasting some ads in SD, which then gets tagged as the recording's res since it is where the recording starts... at least that is what happened to me long ago.
