Server Locks

I have been experiencing odd Sage server lock-ups that happen every couple of days. I will be using one of the HD-200s when I notice a sudden slow down. Menu changes take more time often showing the circular thinking arrows, video playback may stutter, etc.... If I shut the HD-200 off, and then turn it back on using the remote, the server connection is lost.

I go check the server, and WHS is functioning properly without issue. Sage is locked up however. I can't close the Sage front end from the system tray and restart Sage, nothing happens. The only way to restart Sage is by rebooting the server alltogether or administering services and stopping all Sage services. Sage will close and then I can restart the service.

Anyone else see issues like this?

I have Sage debugging turned on, but not sure where the log file is (found a few txt files, but not sure if that is the debugging log). Under the help screen, the only messages I have are referring to an expired EPG that I need to replace, which I do not believe is related based on how long I have had the problem. I would appreciate some guidance on where to find the log.

Server Lockups Cont.

Ok. I found the log file for the server. Finally found the information in the FAQs in the forum. I have 4 different txt files, so I will be reviewing the latest. Unfortunately, I am not sure what I am looking for. I went to the approximate timeframe the server locked yesterday. Here is what I found.

Error seems to be Java related potentially. I am not sure what the error is exactly. I would appreciate any help. I did shut down the Sage services after the server froze. Have already increase the java heap size, so not sure if that is the issue. Recently updated Java, but this issue has been going on before the update.

ARe you allowing your server to go asleep? Is the network card set to allow it to go asleep? This could be part of your issue. Set the network card to never sleep.

Server lockups

I have all the power saving features disabled on the server and never put it to sleep.

For the Realtek NIC, the settings are as follows:

802.1Q/1p VLAN Tagging set to disabled
Auto Disable PCIe (PowerSavings) set to disabled
Auto Disable PHY (PowerSavings) set to Disabled
Checksum Offload set to Rx & Tx Enabled
Flow Control set to Enabled
Green Ethernet set to Disabled
Jumbo Frame set to Disabled
Large Send Offload set to Enabled
Network Address set to Not Present
Shutdown Wake-On-Lan set to Enabled
Speed Duplex set to Auto Negotiation
Wake-On-Lan Capabilities set to Pattern Match and Magic Packet
WOL & Shutdown Link Speed 10 Mbps First

Power Management was set to allow this computer to turn off this device to save power.

I have now deselected the Power Management setting.

I hope it is that easy, that would make my day.

Do the rest of the network card settings look correct?

I would love to enable Jumbo Frames, but I am not sure if that would hurt Sage communications to the HD 200s. It would make things a lot faster when transfering files between computers and the server.

Unless your router supports jumbo frames, it won't work.

Jumbo Frames

My D-link switch does support Jumbo Frames at 9.5kb in Gigabit mode only, but then states performance may be affected when used in 10/100 ethernet mode. Since the HD-200s only work in 10/100, I have not activated Jumbo Frames for fear that communications between the HD-200 and the WHS server will be negatively affected.

Is anyone running a WHS server on a gigabit network and using jumbo frames with an HD-200 connected to the network? Have you experienced any issues?

Jumbo frames really didn't buy me anything. Like you said HD100s and HD200s and MVPs are 100. In some instances performance actually suffered so I turned it off.

Jumbo Frames

Thanks Gerry, Appreciate the help and perspective. Thinking about the network card being put to sleep. Could this happen while you were while using an HD-200? Why would the server power down a network card that is active?

It shouldn't. As long as it stays connected. It might be another issue altogether. But if it loses connection one of the other things that would happen is your hd200 would shut off. The only other thing is to make sure you have the latest driver for your NIC.

Server Lockup

I went onto the Gigabyte website and there is a newer driver set for the NIC. I'll be sure to update the drivers this evening. My rule of thumb has always been - don't update what isn't broken - but this issue has been hindering me for awhile, so very well may be driver related. I'll let you know how it goes, thanks again.

Popcorndog,
Have you been able to resolve the SageTVService lockups?
I've been experiencing them myself every so often, and it always seems to happen at a time that prevents my wife's shows from recording...not good.
Unable to restart the service...only way to get things going again is to reboot the machine.
Had this issue with XP, and now having it with Win7 as well. My guess is that the problem exists somewhere within Sage, rather than a driver issue.

I'd love to be able to pin this one down and make the issue go away.

Thanks.

If it happened in WinXP and Win7, it sounds like a hardware or driver issue, imo. What is your hardware setup, including tuner cards? Do you have logs turned on? If not, turn that on and see what it says next time it happens. You can turn logs on in the main setup menu under advanced I think.

I've been running without incident for 6 months on my WHS setup and suddenly the same problem has been happening to me for the past two weeks.

Thumbs up So Far So Good

Well, I sent in the log and the SageTV Application Package had somehow changed. I was using some customized STV package. Since changing back to the original SageTV3.xml package, I have been running very stable since.

I frequently check for STV updates and noticed when I performed an update the SageTV Application Package changed from the SageTV3.xml to SageTV3.xml with imports. This may be the way the original file is retained and a new file is created with the updates.

Regardless, I quickly changed back to the SageTV3.xml package.

That is what I get for trying to be on top of the updates. I think from here on out I will quit tinkering and leave things be.

For those seeing similar issues (note my experience is with Windows Home Server), I do recommend you turn off all power saving as Gerry recommends. Be sure to also check out which SageTV Application Package your using. The other issues I have had with Sage were solved by increasing the Java heap size. When all else fails, take the time to send in the log! I played around to long and Sage support quickly responded to get me back on track- you rock.
