Help please

I'm a high school student and I'm making a homemade dvr as my project for a class. I cannot get a signal from sagetv. I can see the guide and everything, I just can't get a picture. I am wondering if I did something wrong in the setup?

Also sorry if this is in the wrong place.

Try setting a manual 5 minute recording (without watching while recording) and see if the file gets saved in your recording directory. Is the file being saved? How big is it?

What input do you have into the HVR-1600? AnalogCableTV, ATSC/QAMdigital, or S-Video/Composite. Also, do you have a cable box?

The FX 5200 might be the culprit depending on how your capturing the video - your answers will help clear that up.

I set the recording and will post it as soon as it's done. As for the input, I wasn't sure which to pick. I have tried all three at different points. I have been using the cable that goes right into the back of my tv from the wall. I don't have the satellite box in my room although I have been wondering if I needed to plug it directly from there?

All right, I'm confused. If you have satellite TV, there shouldn't be a cable directly from the wall to your TV. It should go through a satellite receiver first. So maybe you should start by telling us what kind of TV service you're trying to capture: antenna, analog cable, digital cable, or satellite. That will determine what kind of capture device you need. (For instance, the HVR 1600 cannot capture satellite signals.)
