Java needed for WHS backend?

Hello. I'm finally getting around to setting up my WHS SageTV backend (have a HD200 front-end on the way now). So I'm installing SageTV WHS on my self-build WHS (3ghz C2D E8400 4GBRAM, single HVR-2250 tuner) and one thing I'm not 100% clear on is if I actually need to install Java 1.6 before I install the SageTV add-in package. Or, can I just install SageTV add-in and then do all my configuration and setup from the HD200 or a PlaceShifter client?

I will in no way be attempting to launch SageTV interface on the WHS. I don't even have a monitor hooked up to it. So that's where i'm confused, since I won't be interfacing with the actual install on the server, does it need Java installed?

Thanks for the assistance.

SageTV will install Java if it isn't all ready installed. It won't be the latest and greatest though. You can use Remote Desktop to gain access to WHS.

When I installed Sage on my WHS, I installed the latest java runtime first. Java is not just for the user interface. The SageTV service requires it as well.

Thanks for the feedback. I checked out the version that SageTV laid down in ~\SageTV\jre\ and it looked like 1.6.0.5ub10 (or something like that). The latest download of the JRE seems to be 1.6.0.6u16. So I think I'll re-install Sage again and do the latest JRE first.

Thanks again.

maybe WHS is particular in this regard, but usually the order (sage vs java) of install doesn't matter.

that is, I think you should be able to keep Sage installed and just install the newer java on top of it.

(sage service should be stopped, first.)

Correct. The WHS install will install the jre regardless. (It's different in this regard compared ti other OS\client installs.) Just download the latest java and install it with the defaults. WHS will pick that up and use it. Stop the service and reboot the server when done.

I've also found that if you've installed Sage before installing the latest JRE, then you can still install the latest Java, stop the Sage service, delete the jre under the Sage installation directory, and restart it.
