Favorites priority not working correctly

I currently have several favorites, and I have noticed that the priority does not seem to be working correctly. In that I mean that a show at a higher (lower number, which I am assuming means higher priority) priority is not overriding a show at a lower priority.

For example:

On my recording schedule Monday at 8PM-9PM I have "early edition" scheduled on tuner #2, and "south park" scheduled from 8:30PM-9:00PM.

In my favorites manager "everwood" is #3, "early edition" is #13, "south park" is #15, and "i love the 80's" is #19. All of these are set to record first runs & reruns.

Since everwood is at a higher priority, I would think it would override south park, which is the lowest priority.

I looked at the guide for monday at 8PM-9PM, and everwood is highlighted like a favorite is. As are early edition, I love the 80s, and south park (all are from 8-9 except south park is 8:30-9).

Am I missing something here or is this a bug? BTW I am running 2.0.15, but have noticed it in earlier betas.

What's the problem? Have you missed a show? Has Sage informed you of a conflict?

The problem is that the show "everwood" was at a higher priority and was not scheduled to record when it should have been. Instead south park (which was at a lower priority) was set to record.

How exactly do I check for conflicts? Sometimes I see that icon at the top but I can't do much with it without a mouse.

I have since set those south park and early edition episodes to "watched", so now everwood will record correctly.

I see that the Monday episode of "Everwood" is scheduled to replay next Sunday... perhaps it doesn't conflict with anything at that time & SageTV planned to record it then?

I don't know, and I can't check now since I have resolved the conflict manually.

However if this how it does it (and is supposed to), I would sure like to know. How my PVR decides what to record is a good piece of knowlege

Sure you could check -- set those shows back to not watched & see if it gives a conflict warning at Schedule Recordings -> Recording Information. (Or simply check for the conflict icon at the top of the screen on the main menu.) Does it stop scheduling Everwood on Monday again? If so, did it reschedule it for next Sunday?

One way SageTV tries to resolve conflicts is to see if an episode will be aired again at a time when there is no conflict -- it tries to record as many of your favorites as it can.

If the same episode was scheduled for later in the week then Sage would attempt to record everything before throwing a conflict and just record the later episode.

Is there a way to modify this behavour without cancelling favorites or manually having to change this every week?

I know there are later showings for a few of the shows I watch, but I don't want to wait a week because sage is trying to make sure all the reruns are getting recorded.

I have separated out my first runs & reruns for priority like some had suggested, which I think is a great feature.

However I don't like the idea of having to edit these manually every week (it wouldn't be so bad if the todo list went 2 weeks in advance, so I could look through it less often).

I don't think there is any way currently to change that behavior. However that would make a great feature request for 2.1. You should submit something.

Just moved this tread as I realized we were talking about the beta and in the non beta forum.

Use IR instead of favorites. This is one reason I decided that I liked IR after all. I use favorites for those shows that I really don't want to miss & let IR pick up the rest -- the ones where I don't care if I miss some, see them out of order, etc.

The other solution I know of is to add more tuners.

I wouldn't mind a favorite flag to record only if it won't cause a conflict or a rescheduling of a higher priority favorite.

There used to be a setting in the properties file... something like "disable_phase2_optimizations", which controlled whether or not SageTV would look for future airings of an episode to resolve conflicts. You might look for it an flip its value and see what happens.

It is "disable_phase1_optimization" but it does not seem to work any longer since 2.0. Maybe another request to get it re-enabled?

I'm still having trouble with this behavior, the way I get around it is to change the lower priority favorite to only record on certain days, i.e. days when the higher priority favorite isn't airing.
