This is not a network streaming issue. There is something with the way the frames are encoded and the number of times they are repeated. It seems they are only detecting repeated frame rate for few parts of the shows. This is an example (shows number of times a frame should be shown frame base 60):

I'm not certain how to tell if the patter is non-constant. Do you have a tool for that? From the tool that I was using, I certainly RFF=1 at different places..

You can tell by the flags. If you are using the same tool :

TFF = 0, RFF = 0 means show the frame 1 time
TFF = 0, RFF = 1 means show the frame 2 times
TFF = 1, RFF = 1 means show the frame 3 times

For example in the one previously pasted for the second GOP :
2,3,2,3,2,3,2,3,1,1,1,1,1...

then a bit later in the third GOP it goes back to ...1,1,1,2,3,2,3,2,3...

We can see that their content is not following a constant framerate, I think this might be part of what cause the problem. If it was always 2,3,2,3... it would be constant 24fps since 60 frames in one second divided by groups of 2,3 means there are 24 frames.

Based on what you said, it appears to be non-constant as well. Do you know what the broadcast equipment is doing here? Is it trying to do smoother motion by doing the inverse telecine itself or something?

This drives open-source software players (like Mythtv and mplayer) nuts. The only thing I've seen that plays these types of recordings back properly is my HD100 and 7MC. I'm very disappointed that the HD200 does not handle them correctly.

You can always use a network cable with only 4 wires in it instead of 8. If you can make the cables yourself.

It appears that baring ABC stopping this practice, the only solution people have found if you are using a computer based DVR is to throw more processor at it. Apparently using a higher power Core2Duo processor 'hides' the problem as MythTV then has enough processing power to overcome the problem and keep things in sync.

So, this whole problem is a result of ABC trying to save some bandwidth. In this day and age when the major networks could use every pair of eyes it can get to watch it's programming, it seems pretty silly to use non-standard encoding which makes your programming unwatchable for some viewers just to save a little bandwidth. I'm not going to put in a C2D processor just to watch ABC HD, I'll just stop watching ABC.
Demo: does that help any? Maybe something can be coded into the HD200 f/w to compensate?

yeah, sort of. It cured the stutter, but brought back the always-on subs on DVDs. Now if Sage can figure out how to keep the good parts of that fix and update it to the current goodness.

I am having similar problems with stutter on HD recordings from my HD-PVR. Everything works great with the 20090505 firmware, but any of the recent firmwares result in very bad stutter to the point where it is unwatchable.
I am running everything through a Gbit switch, so I don't think the network is the issues (especially since things work great with the 20090505 fw).

Any ideas?

This is a different issue than the ones in the few previous messages since it was related to the signal sent by the broadcaster. Could you try to run the software at http://www.speedguide.net/tcpoptimizer.php to verify your tcp settings?

This involved a change from MPEG-2 to MPEG-4 transmissions from the network to the affiliate stations. During the conversion there were some lip sync issues, but the network has corrected those problems. WTVC takes ABC’s baseband SDI video with embedded AES audio and multiplexes it into an encoded ATSC stream for transmission. The industry-standard ATSC stream contains MPEG-2 video and AC3 audio. ABC/WTVC-9.1 video is 720p HD, long-GOP structure at a frame rate of 59.94 Hz; THIS/WTVC-9.2 is 480i video at a 29.97 Hz frame rate.
