subtitle support in SageTV

I'm not quite shure about the subtitle support in SageTV. Is the status described at 03-14-2009 from Jeffrey Kardatzke up to date ?

I believe that subtitle support is pretty complete now.

I don't have any problems playing mkv's or other videos with external srt subtitle files or the internal mkv subtitles.

I thinik what's pending is DVB subtitles and maybe closed captions for some video types.

i do not have subtitles enabled in mkv. I tried to enable Subtitel in Sagetv, no go.
What decoder do you use Lucas?

In BSplayer, Mediaplayer Classic i have mkv subtitles....

If i set always_use_dshow_player= true in sage properties then i have subtitles by default but subtitle menu dissapear, and also sound are choppy with this.
I tried Ac3 Filter, ffdshow, Arcsoft Decoder, Cyberlink HD decoder, etc, same problem, sound choppy with " always_use_dshow_player= true "

Same problem like this user here:
http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...ubtitle&page=3

I wonder why the options aren't displayed when always_use_dshow_player=true? Also, I was actually having issues with the subtitle options when I was getting video using ffdshow as my decoder with that option set to false. I could enable subtitles but it wouldn't allow me to select any subtitles.

I tried this out very quickly before I came to work and cannot get it to work in SageTV. In Windows Media Player the subtitles show flawlessly with hardware acceleration but in SageTV, nothing. Is there some setting I have wrong?

I have EVR set as my renderer and I have always_use_dshow_player set to true. If I set it to false I get no video with the Arcsoft Video Decoder. When I do get video, mainly from MPEG2 video or if I use ffmpeg as my H.264 decoder, I also get improper colorspace conversion if I have it set to false.

I have the latest RC and the latest SageMC.

I should also add that when I have always_use_dshow_player set to true that the subtitle options don't come up in the menus. But also that for whatever reason SageTV doesn't and never has automatically put a subtitle filter in the graph. I had to force loading vsfilter in Haali to get subtitles to work at all with always_use_dshow_player=true

I began using babgvant's SubtitleRender.

The only disadvantage to it is that it will only use SRT style subtitles. But it works quite well and will still give full accellerated playback. It basically sets the subs as a CC stream that you have to enable when playing rather than using SageTV's subtitle support.

If there are other text based subtitles that are used, I could look into adding support.

This reason for my inital posting was that I could not play VobSub-subtitles in MKV. SageTV was closing as soon as the first subtitle had to be displayed. SageTVPlayer.exe was still runnig acording to Taskmanager.

If sage is crashing, you should contact support.

The filter only works with SRT subs embedded in MKV, and emulates a Line21 decoder (DVD and NTSC broadcast CC).

You'll need to import the included STVi if using the default STV to add the CC toggle option, the latest SageMC has the toggle already enabled.

VobSub support in MKV files

I have been wondering the same thing. I use SageTV v6.6 all running on one machine - no extenders, placeshifters, or anything like that. I am using the latest version of SageMC as well. When I play back MKV files that have vobsub titles embedded, and I go to the video options menu, I don't have an option to enable subtitles. I do see a "Captions (Off)" item, but it cannot be toggled to any other value than Off. So I guess the question (already asked above) is this: Should I be able to enable and view Vobsub subtitles in MKV files in the current release or not? Based on Jeff's most recent post on the topic, it seems that it's a feature that's not yet available in the base SageTV product, but I'm really just trying to confirm that is still the most up to date / valid status update?

I should add to my previous post that I use HD100/200 extenders so subtitles work for me generally.

I just tried playing an mkv file with srt external subtitles on my sagetv server and after starting to play the file, I selected option, clicked the subtitles check box and subtitles appeared.

On my server, since it's not used for playback, I only have DIVX HD codec and everything works fine.

No need to have "always_use_dshow_player= true".

This was from older days when we had to rely on a direct show player (ie not the SageTV player) in order to play the file and have subtitles.
