Recordings Veiw -Thumbs Vs. Rows, Spinning Wheel of Death

I thought I had a problem solved when I deleted and let Sage regenerate thumbnails, as before that when I would go to play a recording that was called from the thumbnail view I got the spinning wheel of death. I had also tried many of the common suggestions in here including increasing Java heap to 200hex, etc.

I found this to be happening primarily on my HD200 extender although I did end up with it on the server as well.

I now find that after the thumbnails came back, the SWOD returned. This seemed to happen on an overnight basis primarily. So, when I went to put a cartoon on for my son in the early AM it usually entailed at least a shutdown of the Sage app, and sometimes a reboot. I never saw the transcoder process issue and never had high CPU usage when this occurred. I cannnot figure why the timing would matter, since my system frequently records at night, is set to never sleep, etc. My SageTV server is on 24/7/365. Even the video is set to never to go screen saver or shut off on the server. The extender goes logo screen saver after 20 minutes.

Service mode vs. standard application mode on the server do not make any difference. I do not import any videos, photos, or music. I also disabled all those type of directories. I don't use networked or mapped directories or play DVD's from folders.

I can't move the HD200 closer to the server as the server is racked and in the basement. I am using a gigabit network.

Is there a thumbnail cache in particular to check? Could it be "overloaded" or need more memory? Could Sage itself need more memory? I have about 600 TV shows recorded at this time, including analog cable, HD-PVR HD recordings, and OTA ATSC recordings. I can't correlate SWOD appearance to any one group of shows, hard drive, or type of show - SD, HD, or H.264.

I always use the all recordings view, and don't archive, so the number of thumbnails in that all recordings view does continue to grow.

Any further thoughts are appreciated.

I would try changing the display to Recordings instead of All and see it that makes a difference. If it does, you can try going higher with your java heap (300h) and see if that gives you any relief.

I use thumbnail view but rarely run over 250 currently active recordings. I'm running java 6u14 (u15 is out but I've not gone there yet). Your system is similar in power to mine so that shouldn't be an issue.

Also check in your settings for your refresh setting for imported media. I use manual and only refresh imported media when I add/remove Blu-ray movies etc.

If all else fails, open a support ticket.

Good luck.

EDIT: I missed this in your post: "I do not import any videos, photos, or music." I would still set to manual refresh for imported media in case some type of search is going on. Unlikely, but won't hurt to try.

Helen:

I tried 2 things:

going back to row view and, of all things, adding a second power supply to power 4 of the hard drives on the off chance that when SageTV might be recording 3 or 4 shows at once it was spinning up enough drives that were idle otherwise and that marginal draw was overloading the PS.

I think I am going to try my thumbnails again.

Just to try to break it, I did the opposite and turned on and imported a ton of .ts videos and such. So far, so good.

I'll try the thumbnails first because I am suspecting lack of power or a surge issue if multiple drives spun up to start several prime time recordings, for example.

Thank you again for your helpful suggestions.
