Just placed an order with newegg...i5 inside!
Well I ordered another computer today so I can get my old PC back for everyday work. I had to migrate to my second PC after my old P4 was having problems with HD-PVRs. The newer AMDX2 had done alright, but I don't like using my sage PC for everyday use. New computer has quad core i5, 2G?B ram and 160GB hard drive. My details are below.
Intel i5 750 2.66GHz CPU GIGABYTE GA-P55M-UD2 LGA 1156 Intel P55 Motherboard G.Skill 2x1GB DR3 1066 RAM Gigabyte 512MB video card WD 160GB hard drive Samsung SATA DVD burner Cooler Master case 500 Watt powersupply

I do have one question with this setup. Should I go with vista 32 bit or 64 bit? This is a sage only server that also runs comskip and maybe some light transcoding.

If you go Vista 64bit make sure you have signed drivers for your hardware devices. (tuners) Vista 64 bit requires that. (But I believe you can get around it. One is through a command line issuing the command bcdedit /set loadoptions DISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS.)

Remember, FireSTB doesn't work with Vista 64, so if if you're planning on using Firewire channel change you might want to consider that.

no point in going 64 bit since you only have 2GB of RAM. If you ever plan to up that to >= 4GB, then go 64 bit to save some headache. If not, then stick with 32 bit.

I think 32 bit doesn't recognize anything about 3GB of ram. At least in my case, my 4GB is recognized as 3GB.

The only thing to consider when dealing with 4GB or more of RAM is that the older PVR 150/250/350/500 drivers don't like it. They will act crazy until you remove some RAM.

I'd stick with 32bit OS, to keep it as "compatible" as possible. You do not need 64bit unless you have more than 4GB and 2GB of RAM you ordered is fine for a SageTV server.
Instead of dealing with Vista's built-in Media Center, I'd use Vista Basic rather than Ultimate/Premium (Unless you need the other features). I find that even after disabling all of VMC services, it has a habit of doing un-expected things on me. Nothing major, but kinda annoying. Finally, I'd recommend NOT installing SageTV in "C:\Program Files"; install it in "C:\SageTV" or something like that to get it out of the way of Vista's UAC. Good luck! |

Why not use the AMD box for Sage? I would rather have the extra power for my desktop.
Why just a 169gb drive? $10 more gets you a 500gb. I had problems with Vista65 because of the signed drivers thing. I was able to use it as a client but it was a pain the setup. Window7 has been much more friendly but I have only used it as a client since I now use WHS for my Sage Server. WHS is the way to go. Separating the Recording and Playback makes for a much more stable system. You can reboot or or play with the machine and not worry about messing up any recording. |

Yea, for SageTV I'd say stick with 32-bit. And honestly, I'd also say go with XP. I'm still using XP on my SageTV server. I was planning on upgrading it to Vista but I've seen far too many people having problems with it and SageTV in various forms. That being said I was running Vista x64 on my main computer, which also serves as a client. I'm currently running Windows 7 x64 on it. Runs great as a client OS.

I think that I will have to agree to stick with 32 bit vista. I did consider leaving sage with the old AMD box, but I really don't need that kind of horsepower on my regular pc. It just gets used as a web browser and DVD burner. The sage pc will be running comskip which has been loading the old AMD pretty heavy. In regards to the small hard drive, I will only have the os installed on the 160 gig so I see no point in having a huge drive.
