HD PVR random Copy Protection message
I've got a strange one. Has anyone else seen this?
I'm on Time Warner Digital with a HD PVR connected to the Component level outputs. Every now and then half way through a show it will give a copy protection message on the screen and list the YPbPr as the source. Sometimes it happens for a few seconds during a show and then the show comes back again. Has anyone seen this? I hope they aren't trying to kill the HD PVR. How exclusionary to force us to use their PVRs. It's one thing to protect content it's another to protect content only so you can force people to only buy your product. I'll have to go to Moxi if they kill the HD PVR. Thanks guys. |

That doesn't sound good... Can you post a screen shot of it?

There isn't a way for the cable box to "communicate" with the component output and detect what is connected to it. So I'm guessing something else is going on. I'd try to switch out your TWC Cable box for another one.

They want to be able to do it on day and date releases of some movies the day they hit BD/DVD. The ability is there, maybe TWC is doing a little experimenting as well. To my knowledge, DirecTV has never downresed or blocked a signal but they could if it was required by the studio.

Unfortunatly, they are really fighting a moot issue at this point anyway. They are looking to protect earlier release content from being recorded and illegally distributed to protect DVD/BD sales, while at the same time, the DVD/BD encryption is eaily bypassed and results in a better source anyways. Therefore, no pirate would be trying to record content from the component anyway.
If they do continue down this path.. HDFury is the next step. Hate to see people having to go that route though.

Okay before we all get carried away, I have a quick question for the OP:
Are you using the HDMI out to your TV as well as the component to the HD PVR?

Did you guys see the recent article on the MPAA again pushing for "selectable output control" that was on Ars a couple days ago?

When I had TWC about a year ago I saw this as well on my SA 8300HD using component, it happened about once every 3 months or so and I just yanked the power cable out of the box and rebooted it. That always fixed it and it was incredibly annoying but those things needed a good kick in the butt every so often, man did they suck... yay for directv!
And remember everyone, when the man drops the other foot and kills Component theres always HDFury: http://www.hdfury.com/

I love that idea. HDMI->HDFURY2(VGA)->(MYSTERY BOX)->SAGETV Without going HDMI->HDFURY2(COMPONENT->HD PVR->SAGETV Last edited by nyle; 09-04-2009 at 09:45 PM. |

I will when I'm watching a show and it appears again. I deleted the last one.

The HD Fury 2 does HDMI to YPbPr (Component) for capture with the HD PVR - don't know of any VGA capture cards.

OTA in rural America is almost non-existent. There is no reason the FCC couldn't force cable to broadcast non pay channels ATSC/ClearQAM. Force them to not use custom tuners, much like Cablecard was supposed to open the market. They managed to keep it locked down so much that it didn't happen.
We should be able to buy cable card for use with SageTV on our own home built PCs. I've written the FCC, has anyone else? |

The FCC already requires cable co's to carry the local channels in the clear.

Is the HDMI cable connected though? I know it sounds crazy but HDMI can still talk to the device whether the connection is "active" or not. It may be that your TV is talking to the box? Back in the day when I used to capture analog from the cable box I had a missed recording overnight that simply said "your display is not authorized" or something like that. The culprit: STB to TV connection was HDMI, and the TV was off. So the cable box was missing the HDCP handshake. I had a similar issue with the HD PVR when I first started using it. The only solution that worked for me, when I used to use the pass-through, was to not connect the HDMI cable at all.

You can, if/when Sage supports cablecard tuners. Cablecards are no longer locked to OEM's, so anyone can throw one in any machine. Unfortunately the only software that can currently use them as a tuner is Windows Media Center. All this was recently announced, so you can't do it yet, but soon.
