New Linux setup

Hello,

I'm considering setting up an ubuntu Sage box as a front end and have a couple of questions:

1. Can you install sage linux on ubuntu? Edit: Answered in the linux faq, woops : http://forums.sagetv.com/forums/show...242#post257242
2. Is sage linux player vdpau enabled? I'll be using it for HD content so vdpau is a must. Maybe I could frig the placeshifter mplayer to use compiled in vdpau patches?

Cheers,
Alex

It seems like most linux users on the forum, including me, use ubuntu.

I don't think that it's currently VDPAU-enabled. I started out to build an all-in-one box, but I've never actually used it that way. Instead, my ubuntu box is a server and I have a couple of HD-200's that I use for watching. I would highly recommend that kind of setup. The linux sage client, which is actually placeshifter, is very jerky when watching video on my system. Placeshifter on my MacPro is better, but the HD-200's are really great, as well as being small, silent, and very low power. The ubuntu SageTV server is rock-solid, once it's set up. I think of it like a store-and-forward switch, since it just grabs digital video data off USB (hdpvr) or ethernet (HDHR), and send it back out on request to the clients.

Do others have a better experience with the linux placeshifter? If so, what hardware? I've got an AMD X4 905e, 4GB, nvidia 8200. It usually runs at least 97% idle, but does use most of the memory.
